ADMINS!!! You've really got to clean up this thread. I've kept my mouth shut for long enough, but I'm sick of page after page after page of people whining about not getting jobs because they're a white male. No matter who is hired for what job and what school, the thread always devolves into this crap that is off topic and buries the newsworthy stuff. Just created a separate thread.
First of all, I'm a white male too, and I've been turned down for some awesome jobs that I would've loved, but they were looking for a different demographic. Who cares? I apply to the next one, and I've landed 3 good ones so far as I work my way up the ladder and I'm not even 30 yet. More hard work, less time crying about it on LetsRun.
I think it's more than fair to be giving women and minorities a leg up in the hiring process considering up until only a half century ago segregation was legal, and slavery is only as far removed in our country's history as the MLB is old. Not to mention that women weren't even allowed in the NCAA until the early 1980s.
Even once "equality" was gained through the Civil Rights Movement, or once the Civil War ended, POC were given no wealth or education or jobs to overcome generations of enslavement and poverty and lack of schooling, and so it has been difficult to break free of those cycles. If your biggest complaint is that a minority got into a college over you, or got a job over you, or was awarded some sort of grant over you, that is your privilege showing.
As for women getting so many prominent jobs, as I mentioned earlier, I'm not even 30 and yet barriers to sports for women is so recent that my own mom was still in high school when the NCAA finally allowed women to compete. That's how fresh it is. It's taken decades to start to even out participation in sports by gender, but there's still a much smaller pool of older established female coaches due to the aforementioned barriers they faced.
A coaching staff should be reflective of the athletes they represent, and when your teams are roughly 50% women but a staff of 6 typically has 0-1 female coaches, that shows a problem in our field. Same for when our teams are roughly 50% black across all event groups, and you have 0-2 minority coaches on staff. My current job I have, 31 people applied for it. 1 white woman with no prior coaching experience, zero people of color, and 30 white males. In this case, my resume and interview stood out above other candidates, but there are going to be times when they choose a slightly less beefy resume in favor of someone who can help their staff represent the kids they're coaching, and that's perfectly fine. These kids need to be able to see more people who look like them in positions of authority if we're ever going to reach a truly equal playing field.
In conclusion, everybody SHUT UP, and admins please start taking action by deleting peoples' posts on here that unravel into these ignorant side discussions. If you don't have information about a job that is open, opening, or being filled, then you don't need to post. Thank you.
How did you access the information with regard to the demographics of the other applicants who applied for your job? Shouldn't that be confidential?
Just curious.
