EVERYONE should read this. Yellen's transfer of debt from short to long term has major long term negative effects on any efforts to dig our way out of this hole. We saw a similar problem with short term housing loans leading to the housing and stock market crash in 2008-2009. I'm not saying we're headed for a crash, but this is bad!
It's a double-edged sword because attempts to raise awareness in the public will erode their trust in financial institutions and in the US's ability to pay the interest on our federal debts, which in turn could raise federal interest rates.

Anyway, it's always been treasury policy to keep markets orderly and not make it look like the US is messing with markets too much. The world needs a carpton of short term debt - what do you think trillions of dollars in money markets buys? if we had switched to all long term, it would be capsized the markets and mispriced trillions of debt.
And of course the stupid suicidal debt limit ties her hands up all the time.
Yellen did it right. It's usually good to be the dominant economy on the planet...but in this case her hands were tied by how financial markets depend on trillions of US debt to be used as lubricant and energy. We have to issue the expected amount of short, intermediate and long term debt. Although sure on paper issuing a bunch of very long term debt at 1% would have been great on paper.
