Alexi Pappas in the women's 10,000 should have ditched the hat and gone for the water. The hat was a ticking time bomb in hot weather. Unless maybe she had something cold under it.

I enjoyed the online coverage and was shocked by the small crowd in attendance. Seems like tickets should have been given away to make it at least look like a respectable crowd.

Also didn't notice anyone of the 10k competitors shake Galen's hand after his 7th straight win, with the exception being at the awards stand. Is this bad sportsmanship or a telling sign of the truth in the allegations?

Neither.

He did a quick group hug with True & Mead. It's at 29.34 in the video. After that, he was hustled of the track, although he stopped for an awkward (half) hug with Alberto and to sign a few autographs with fans.

I'm with you on the crowd size. It looked smaller than the Friday crowds for the Pre. But, as you say, tickets for that are free, and it usually isn't quite so hot.

PS Make that "a VERY awkward hug with Alberto." That Gaelic reserve thing must drive the Cuban nuts.

My coach recommended this specifically for the 10000m in 90+ degree weather last year at club nationals. Granted our women aren't as fast as Alexi Pappas but I don't think it's a very far-fetched concept and he's a pretty reputable dude in the PNW

Looks like yesterday's 8,762 was the 2nd best Thursday attendance ever at a @usatf championships (not including Olympic Trials).

He also has a chart of daily attendance going back to 1980 on his twitter if you wanted more info rojo.

A wet hat or just a hat? I can't see the point unless the sun is beating down on you.

There's no point to a hat except to keep the sun off, cold, cold wind or dust.

Attendance or tickets sold? NO WAY there was half of that number on the grounds or in the stands or in the neighborhood during the 10k.

Sprinters have family and fans too. After they were done they probably rolled as not to be associated with the doper distance freaks. May well have been less than 8k+ in attendance for the 10k, and that wasn't what Squires posted.
