LD, you also nailed 1960s/70s running very well. We used to buy "running" (work) gloves/mittens at Kapplan Bros. in Minneapolis....3 pr for a $1.00!! They were huge one-size fits all, and when washed before using, the weave tightened up and got us through Minnesota winters quite well. I recall being as warm with those as my $25.00 Pearl Izumi gloves thirty years later. Ah, marketing.

Alf looked a little heavy (and hairy) to have been a great runner. His sit-com wasn't even that funny.

OK LD. I'm as yuppie as they come. Your typical metrosexual pretty boy, used to model in my 20s, spend $80 on haircuts, drive a BMW convertible, buy my clothes at Saks and my groceries at Whole Foods. All the stuff you envy but claim to despise. I train roughly 70 mpw, run marathons in the 2:40s, PR is 2:38. Let's see how this test stacks up:

TRAINING

YR- Daniels.

BCR- Lydiard.

Me- Pfitzinger - inbetween, you decide.

SHOES

YR- Nike Shox.

BCR- Minimalist shoes.

Me- Lightweight trainers or "heavy flats". Adizero LT. Closer to BCR

GLOVES

YR- Pearl Izumi.

BCR- Wells Lamont.

Me- North Face - closer to YR

PANTS

YR- Tights.

BCR- Long Johns under shorts/old pants over shorts.

Me- Live in California, never run in pants but if I did I wouldn't be caught dead in Long Johns.

HEART RATE MONITOR

YR- Polar HRM.

BCR- Two fingers on neck.

Me- Never measure my HR when running. Not once. Definitely BCR

MASSAGE

YR- Twice a week.

BCR- Twice in a lifetime usu. with sex.

Me- Only as treatment for injuries.

SPORTS DRINK

YR- Gatorade.

BCR- Coke/beer.

Me- Usually just water + solid carbs. Sports drink at races only. Neither.

SPORTS BAR

YR- PowerBar/Clif Bar.

BCR- Little Debbie/Snickers.

Me- PowerBar - YR

SPORTS GEL

YR- GU/PowerGel.

BCR- Snot.

Me- Usually nothing (ie. snot) but I consume probably 3 GUs per month - more like BCR

I'd say this test is inconclusive.

Time for New Running Shoes:

YR: Sees 1/8 inch of wear on the tread or ad for version 10

BCR: Sees old bloody spot on sock through the hole in the tread

Man, somebody's penis envy is showing. If you're so fu\cking miserable being blue collar why didn't you "gut it out" when you were in school? Maybe you'd have a few gadgets and pretty jackets by now.

Maybe you'd even realize that people with demanding careers and 80-hour work weeks are all into gutting it out, but sometimes an all-nighter at the office means you miss that Thursday tempo workout.

The fact that many yuppies still kick your ass in half marathons off 55 mpw is just adding insult to injury, but I suspect that's why you're so angry.
