Anyone ever had a "Sports Hernia" aka: "Sportsman's hernia", "Gilmore's groin", or &quot

Dr Joesting performed my surgery about 10 weeks ago. I feel like I'm almost back 100%, but only with my cross-training (step aerobics, spinning, strength). Every now and then I feel the "pain" again in my hip flexor. I've done a little running indoors on a treadmill and track, but I'm afraid to get back outside. From the sounds of your recovery and others posted here, my little "pain" is normal and I need to give it some time--? Would you say this is true? Any advice or experience you can share would be great!

Bart Yasso from Runners World magazine conducted a seminar at my work yesterday. I asked him if he had any advice for sports hernia recovery...he closed his eyes and shook his head as he sighed...and said "that's tough, just have to listen to your body". I took that to mean this injury is somewhat permanent and there's not much hope. But, I'm going to remain optimistic!!

I am also five weeks exactly from the surgery. Doing the rehab now. I'm feeling pretty good. The surgery was tougher than I expected but I can already feel the difference. The adductor is a little sore but it's really coming along. I'm feeling very positive about the surgery and very grateful to Dr. Meyers.

checkin to see if you found someone and how it went...i am in omaha, ne, seems we are very much alike....i have to get back on the court for the sake of my sanity, ive done therapy and rest for the past couple months...tried to play the other day , took my time warmin up, felt good, and as soon as i made a quick burst to the rack....the shooting pain came back

i have found a very good surgeon in lincoln, ne....i am still worried about recovery especially inregards to the mesh....have heard a lot of complaints about ongoing discomfort maybe caused by the mesh....how are you? what 'd you end up doin?, etc????

I first had some abdominal pain in November of 2005. I have had very little physical activity since then, although I did go snowboarding a few times. It doesn't seem to hurt it that bad...just some minor soreness from sitting up a lot. I haven't done anything about it yet...kinda was just ignoring it and hoping that it goes away....and, of course, it hasn't. That's a full 6 months, with virtually no improvement. I'm in a golf league in the summer and don't want to let down my partner, so, I\'m planning on doing something after that in September. I guess there is Joesting in the Twin Cities, Cattey in Milwaukee and Meyers in Philly. I'm not loaded with $$$ and I suppose that $ shouldn't be a factor, but it is for me. I'm not sure what I'm going to do...but I miss playing ball and hangin with the fellas. Who is the surgeon in Lincoln? That might be a possibility for me. Thanks.

I was running up a slight hill training for a 20k race here in Japan and something..tore.

I went to the specialist here and diagnosed me with anti-flams and rest. No help. Then sent me to an ortho. dcotor...told me it was tendinitus and began doing core exercies and strething for 3 months. Didn't work either. So, now I have surgery scedulaed THIS FRIDAY (6/9/06) and I'm really nervous. I've never had surgery for and my Japanese isnt that good to deal with medical terms. But, they are flying down the premire guy in Japan to do the surgery.

my right nut hurts now just sitting here typing this. I can cycle, but there is always this little pinch.

Can anyone tell me the cosmetic effects? I know its kinda vain but, i'd like to know. Where do they make the incision(s)?

I am having surgery June 14th in Montreal and can't wait. I have one question for everyone, my pain is on both sides one day I will be sore on my left then sometimes on my right. I am not sure if I have a Sports Hernia on one or both sides, like I said I am just wondering if this is common for those who have a sports hernia. Or is the case that only one side aches and is sore? About the surgery I believe that it is a 5 inch cut that is pretty well hidden after surgery but will have a better idea after my surgery I guess. hehe. Wish me luck.

Thought this thread coming back was good. I have had constant pain down low for about 8 years now. Had a hernia exploratory surgery over two years ago. This did nothing and I was running lightly about 10 weeks later. Had a cortizone shot in the pubic region a year later when the pain came back. This seemed to help a lot after about 2 months. I was about 80% and then with about 5 -7 weeks of high mileage I was hurting twice as bad. So I seeked out Dr. Cattey in Wisconsin. He did a athletic publagia surgery and said my lower stomach muscles where pulling away from my pubic bone. He made 3 incisions or stab cuts in my lower abs below my belly button. This was 4 weeks ago tomorrow. I did not exercise the first 2 weeks and on the third week last week I started to ride my bike. After two 12 milers, one 15 miler, and 1 20 miler, I got some swelling down low in the middle incision. I want to start running lightly but still have that pain, along with some pain on the side in which i had before the surgery. My symptoms are:

Extreme pain after prolonged exercise in the region directly above the penis.

Swelling in the area above the penis, this goes down shortly after exercise

Some slight pain in the left side of the lower abs by the aductor muscle.

Dr. Cattey did not do the adductor release and I feel i might have needed this as well. He is not too high on this like Dr. Meyers is. Is anyone else gone to see Dr. Cattey and had this procedure done? How long until the swelling was gone and the pain was gone when you exercised?

I thought I'd give this thread a bump since I've been dealing with symptoms similar to those mentioned often here. For the past 8 months or so, I've had groin pain that has gotten progressively worse. It seemed to come about last summer when I was doing alot of ab work and lunges. If I get up from a seated position at a strange angle, I'll sometimes feel a popping in my lower abdominal/adductor insertion area. I've followed this thread for a while, half in fear and half in denial. I haven't taken any signifigant time off from running (until now - going on 1 week) for fear of losing fitness and because of some of the discouraging accounts I've read of those who've recieved no relief from rest and/or surgery. I have no diagnosis of course, but is it possible that I have something other than a sports henia? Has anyone out there overcome this without having surgery? Any positive and/or alternative solutions?

You might have a Gilmore groin. Try ice and lots of rest. It should get better before you know it.

i had successful s.h. surgery performed by myers 17 mos ago. 2 months later, upon return to the the shortest, slowest and gentlest jogging imaginable, i tore meniscus in both knees- orthopod feels it was because the adductor release had a "destablizing" effect on the knees, since the adductor muscle attaches below the knee and does help control deceleration during the support phase of the stride.

so i had cartilage tears repaired. lost 20% of menial meniscus on both sides. 1 year later, and i still cannot get over the pain in my knees well enough to train. 20-30 mins 3-4 times per week is all i can take, down from 90-110/week prior to my initial surgery. no amount of strenthening, therapy, cross training or cortizone has made a difference.

i'm not writing to ask for advice because i don't believe anyone here can help me. i am just wondering if i am the only one who has had knee problems following the surgery.

I can not believe having been to this thread since 12/05 that no one has yet explained EXACTLY what is being cut and re-attached or repaired in these operations. It wouldn't surprise me to find that one person posted all these responses, in an attempt to drum up business, but refused to explain exactly what they do.

I had the hernia surgery with Dr. Meyers in 3/05. I had a torn rectus abdominus muscle which he repaired and he did double adductor releases. I was NOT one of the people who was up and running in 12 weeks as he said. I followed the PT protocol to a tee. It just did not seem like the surgery was a success. I went back to see him and was put on a 6 week course of Indocin. Then he said I had osteitis pubis and gave me cortisone shots in my pubic bone. Then he put me on a regimen of Elavil. It was not until August, 2005 that I was able to start running. That was 6 months post-op. Finally I am completely pain free. Was it the surgery that did it or just being off running for almost a year? Who knows.? It was a long, long ordeal.

I often wonder if others went through what I did. But I am healthy now.

I think this is an honest thread. I also believe that a sports hernia/athletic pubalgia is difficult to dx. and that surgery is a crapshoot.

Hi gal, when you say he repaired the rectus ab, do you mean he grabbed all the abdominal muscle layers (3 or 4) in your lower abdomin, pulled them down and reattached them where they all come together on the pubic bone? Is this exactly what happened? When you say he did an adductor release, do you mean he cut the adductor muscle attachment to the pubic bone and just let it float on both sides? Is that exactly what he did? Thanks gal, for your consideration and sharing.

You know I am not 100% of exactly what Dr.Meyers did. On Monday I will read the operating report and post to let you know exactly what was performed.

I have read these threads FROM THE BEGINNING, and it makes me sick to read about how many local surgeons ignored or misdiagnosed, and in some cases operated on something that they made ABSOLUTELY NO EFFORT TO UNDERSTAND. Lets see a show of hands from those who were repeatedly told there was nothing wrong with them, only to finally have a sports hernia diagnosed and treated. As for the guy waiting for a response from the boy in Katrina land at the hernia center, don't hold your breath, because there's no money in talking to someone on the internet. Send your complaints to the President / Chairman of the American Medical Association 515 N. State St. Chicago, IL 60610. Don't forget that your local State Health and Human Services dept. can also help you address the behavior of those who were nothing more than a roadblock on the road to a proper diagnosis. Good Luck!
