Maybe you missed the very next paragraph in the speech where Paul Ryan said he put forth a plan to the house in response to Bowles-Simpson. The plan was based on the things he liked about Bowles-Simpson with other ideas added in. It was passed by the House. What did Obama do in response to the Bowles-Simpson proposal? Absolutely nothing. The point was not that Paul Ryan agreed or disagreed with Bowles-Simpson. The point was that a bipartisan debt commission was put together by Obama in order to solve our debt crisis. they couldn't necessarily agree on any solutions but did agree on the urgency of tackling the problem of our nation's debt. What was Obama's response to this urgency? Nothing. What plan did he put forward? He has none.

How did we get from Ryan's Marathon time to Simpson-Bowles? What is it about Ryan's lie about his marathon time that bothers you so much that you need to bring up an entirely different subject?

a) ryan claimed in his speech that the bowles simpson commission issued an "urgent report". that is simply not true. and it is not true specifically because paul ryan voted against that report. do you think someone who doesn't pay close attention to politics would know that based on ryan's speech?

b) obama did in fact create and attempt to implement a long term deficit reduction plan. unfortunately, paul ryan and other republicans in the house would not consider it for even a moment because it contained >$0 of tax increases. so obama and ryan are at worst on the same footing here.

c) that was far from ryan's only outright lie in his speech.

d) if you support republican governing philosophy in general, you should still vote for romney and ryan. but you can't pretend that the guy is being honest. he is not. he (and romney) are running an incredibly cynical campaign, premised on lies and distortions. (e.g., obama "apologizes" for america, doesn't understand america, wasn't born in the US, eliminated work requirements from welfare - all of this is untrue, and much of it is the centerpiece of their campaign).

This guy is a completer liar. I can't believe people actually want him as the vice president. If he lies about simple stuff like this, what can we expect from him as a vice president?

There is a very believable explanation for this mixup. He just got confused with 4 and 3 hours. It's not like he ran 3:30 - he ran just under 4 hrs and he said he ran just under 3 hrs.

And so yes i very much think it's a matter of party affiliation as to whether you think he lied or simply mis-spoke.

I mean Barack Obama once said there were 57 states in the United States. Was he lying when he said that or simply misspeaking?

Obama cannot pass Bowles-Simpson or another plan by presidential decree. There need to be enough votes lined up to offer a chance at passing any legislation, otherwise it's a waste of time. What the Republicans passed in the House was for show, nothing more. You don't know what kind of negotiation is going on behind the scenes. If the Democrats and Republicans don't come together to work on this then nothing will happen. Politicians need to stop treating America like a sporting event where they think one side will win.

Have you ever known a four-hour marathoner who would respond that way if he had just inadvertently said he ran in a little under 3 hours?

Did you actually hear what Paul Ryan said? Let me quote it for you: "Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something", and when the reporter expressed his surprise, before wanting to move on to the next question, Ryan followed it up with "I was fast when I was younger, yeah."

Please don't make things worse by telling us that anyone who has run in high school, and finished a 4:01 marathon, does not know the difference between 2:50s and 4:01. He was very specific with his "two hour and fifty-something", and he must have known right there that he wasn't telling the truth.

You may well believe that such a little bit of self-aggrandizing is insignificant compared to the policy difference between Romney/Ryan and Obama/Biden, and I would agree with you. But right now, you're making yourself look like a complete fool. Just like Paul Ryan knows the difference between 4:01 and 2:50s, you understand more than enough about running to see that pleading ignorance does not hold water here.

But this was in the age before anybody thought of "chip time".

So he finished the race knowing he didn't achieve a sub-4:00-h-time (which would be a reasonable aim for a sports guy who doesn't specialize in distance running). How can he confuse that with breaking the three hour barrier?
