Harvard was participating in a science fair, idiots. Isaac Newton would be rolling in his grave over these comments. There's more to life than running (gravity, inertia, etc.). Saretsky's turning these boys into men-renaissance men-and that's about more than running out of breath in a snow-covered field.

Their top guy James leakos dropped due to an ongoing Achilles injury he has been dealing with for the last month. The first Harvard guy was 28 th, jakob lindaas. Oh and Adam cotton ran, coming 44th overall

I think these posts were a weak attempt at humor and not intended to be taken seriously.
But on a serious note - your number one runner has been dealing with Achilles problems for the past month and you run him anyway, in a pointless race with your B team? This just adds bad judgment to horrendous coaching. Hopefully the young man did not rupture the tendon. Something is very wrong with this whole picture.
THANKS to Brett and crew at hepstrack.com. I was at the meet and still checked their coverage when I came home--their comments and interviews and videos added a lot.
And, of course, CONGRATULATION TO THE BIG RED WOMEN! They competed all season without their projected #1/#2 runner, Karys (stress fx), and still managed to win against an outstanding field. Most probably expected Katie Kellner to finish first-team all-Ivy, but Genna Hartung's fifth-place finish had to be a surprise to many. Cornell's fifth runner, Janel Parker, made a HUGE move in the last 1500m or so and nailed Columbia's fifth in the home stretch--moving the team score from a tie to a two-point Cornell win.
Nevertheless, Columbia showed that it's probably the (Heps) team to beat at Regionals. Now that they're at something close to full strength, they're coming on like gangbusters.

Well, with this year's Heps out of the way it's naturally time to look ahead to next year's. The first six men across the line were seniors, prompting me to wonder whom each school has returning next year.
Brown loses 1-3, returns 4-7, some seniors among the rest.
Columbia loses 1 and 4, returns nine of the other ten.
Cornell loses 6, returns the other eleven.
Dartmouth loses 1 and 2, returns 3-7; only finished ten today.
Harvard returns all ten who finished today.
Penn loses 4, 7, and 10; returns the rest of today's twelve.
Princeton loses 1, 2, 7, and 9 from today's race; the rest of the twelve return.
Yale loses 5, 6, and 9, returning the other nine.
Looks like the top four teams in today's race take much more substantial graduation hits than do the other four. It'll be interesting to see how much of a shakeup there is in next year's meet. I'd say the *very* early book puts Columbia as the favorite. I'd look for Cornell to move up (and would say the same for Harvard, except I've learned not to make predictions for them). And I think Yale could be the real surprise next year.
Anyway, great meet and superb competition today. Thanks to all the officials and volunteers who did a solid job in very trying conditions.

Here are the scores with this year's seniors and next year's would-be non-scorers (> 7) taken out. Figured this pretty fast, might have effed up somewhere, but the gist of it is pretty apparent.
Princeton 1-4-6-9-14 = 34
Columbia 2-3-8-11-12 = 36
Cornell 5-18-19-22-24 = 88
Dartmouth 10-13-16-37-42 = 118
Yale 7-21-28-31-45 = 132
Brown 17-27-29-30-41 = 144
Harvard 20-26-32-34-38 = 150
Penn 36-39-40-46-49 = 210
So if next year's race only contained this year's non-seniors, several things stand out.
1) It should be a really, really tight 2-team donnybrook FTW (Columbia's 7th returner finished ahead of Princeton's 6th, FWIW)
2) Dartmouth gets nailed hard by graduation and falls off sharply after #3
3) Brown takes just as hard of a graduation hit up front
4) Yale will have to get a damn sight better to be the real surprise next year
5) Harvard had better hope for 50 degrees and no rain/snow, mud, rocks, sticks, sharp turns, bugs, uneven footing or a paper bag threatening to blow across the course so they can give their full team the green light to start the race, then they've got the firepower to get 3rd (heh-heh, had to pile on there)
6) We should all cut Penn some slack this year with what they've been through, but they had better do some serious recruiting or they'll be looking up out of the cellar for years
Why start talking for next year already? We still have Regionals and nationals to compete in! Do you think more than one Ivy for each gender will make the big race? I think both Princeton and Columbia for the men, while Cornell, Columbia, and Princeton could make it for the women... and a few individuals on either side as well.
By the way, I didn't do a similar "graduation analysis" for the women because seniors were nearly irrelevant in this year's meet: only five in the first 50+ finishers. However, for completeness' sake:
Harvard loses its 1-2 (and 7); Princeton loses its 1; Dartmouth loses its 2. Not much else to report--except that Cornell's 5, Janel Parker, who probably ran one of the six fastest last miles in the race and sealed the win for the Big Red, is a senior.

I noticed something else that calls int question the coaching oversight of Harvard's runners. Take a look at the post-race pictures. Some of the Harvard runners were allowed to run under these extreme conditions with no protection whatsoever! They literally ran in a rainy, snowy mid-teens or lower wind chill with only their shorts and singlets. Shouldn't the coach have the foresight to ensure the runners come prepared with hats, gloves, not to mention arm warmers, mock tees, and other cold weather gear? I was taken aback by the thought of runners let loose into this maelstrom without a shred of protection.
