Either he is a Jim Ryan level talent or an extremely talented runner with a great doctor - I mean I'm not sure what drugs will make a 16 year run 1:42.
no amount of drugs is going to give a 16 year old 46 open/45 relay speed. just flat out talent
I hope Cooper doesn’t turn pro early. He’s got the talent (obviously) so no need to rush development. He will have a longer career if he takes the NCAA route.
Cooper aside, Maggi Congdon may have had the race of the day. I just watched the race again and didn't realize she got kicked all the way to last place. watching her go from last place, splitting the middle, avoiding that trip, and still keeping her composure to kick down 2 runners for a spot on the team was impressive as hell. I recall in indoors she said she and Smith have been working on her kick. looks like it paid off.

I mean... if you're competing for WRs/World Championships before even graduating high school, I think college racing is a waste of time, no?
its moments like this that keep me following the sport after all these years and despite all the BS.
Donavan Brazier proving, 6 years out from his peak season and after persistent injury, that he is still has it in him and that he still the man to beat in the US 800m scene. That man is all class. Would love to see another gold medal around his neck but the end of season.
And as for Lutkenhaus- has to be the greatest performance by high school athlete in US history. And at only 16. Can anyone do quick math and see if there is an IAAF score higher for a high school performance. I sincerely doubt it.
To all the people crying dope, I bet you're the same who accuse Wanyonyi of doping. Well, Wanyonyi is still best in the world, and Cooper is only a second slower, so what does that make Cooper? Personally I think it's delusional to think Lutkenhaus is doping his marks throughout the years indicate he has unfathomable talent

NCAA is where development is rushed and they're not looked after
high school rising junior half second slower than Seb Coe's PB 0.1 slower than Emannuael Korir, faster than steve cram and ovette. sure, whatever. stupid.
Like seriously, does he even go back to high school?
It's not even fair, he should be banned from HS 800's
Only 200/400 and 1600/3200 for him.
Screw it, Cooper is my favorite for Footlocker!
I was thinking about this, but he's not done with track until mid XC season. He probably doesnt start XC training until the week of the league meet? He could win in a tactical disaster class where for some reason top XC guys don't push the pace and let a guy with like 8 seconds on them in the 800 kick. But I think essentially only two months of XC training will be an issue for him.
