The women's 400m was extremely interesting for multiple reasons. Obviously a great battle between Whittaker & Jaeger, with great outdoor PBs for both women. Both are real fighters, it was a superb race.
But there were other layers to it: who would have thought Olympic & World medalist Bukowiecka would finish just 6th here? That is her worst performance for some time. It was something like her 5th outdoor run over the 400m distance, so she is well raced already. But she was so far behind the top two.
Anning had a very yo-yo like performance, starting extremely fast, then slowly down considerably round the second turn, before coming through in the last 50m. But good for her that she beat Adeleke & Bukowiecka, the two women that finished just ahead of her in Paris.
Adeleke hasn't improved her last 50 like she said she was trying to do, but we have to bear in mind this is only her first 400m this outdoor season, whereas others have run much more already. So I think it was actually an ok run.
Klaver was very tentative over the first 200m, something like only 7th at that point, then she hit the second turn hard and went from 7th to 2nd. Probably too hard, as she faded in the last 50m, but it at least got her 5th and a win over Bukowiecka. Clearly her speed - which is her strength - isn't there yet.
We still have 3 months until Tokyo, so you can beat the order will change by then.
