Would love to see the NCAA test athletes regularly. If the NCAA is going to be a pro league with foreign professional athletes, would be nice to have certainty of a clean sport, amongst all events. Would rather be on top of it here than find out an athlete was banned in their own country months ago while they’re on their way to NCAA nationals. That’s all.
Not watching live, but per timing site, Shelby rabbited through 5600 meters. Last lap was in the 73s after consecutive 72-flats.
Well, at least we know Shelby can easily break 15-flat right now in a 5000 race. Probably something close to 14:40 given good conditions & competition;
But, have to wonder about her 10,000. Slowed down to mid-73 her last lap because Cranny couldn't hold 72s, then peeled off. Didn't try to play hero ball tonight and go the distance. But could she have?
Cranny & Kelati's 30:30s were fine, but not prs. And nothing close to the AR, much less the WR. While the other top US women behind them in this race tonight appear to be marathoners.
My guess would be Shelby FTW in both the 5000 & 10,000 at USAs this summer if that's what she wants to do.
Is Mike smith dumb? A week after Nico’s 5k/3k indoor NCAA double, he raced The Ten last year.
Cornfield is having Elise do the same except the 10k first, and she’s getting guaranteed pay.
Someone have something against Cornfield? A lot of people seemingly do…jealous?
I don’t believe it was a jealous remark. Cornfield killed her with too many races indoors and is now repeating it. I’m a fan of Elise, but she seemed shot tonight.
The calculus is simple for any athlete in Lobalu's position: he already has the 10000m standard from his race in Valencia in January and he has no competition for a place on the Swiss team. The Ten probably isn't paying him and if it is, it's probably a relative pittance. GST will give him tens of thousands. Any athlete in that position would take the GST dollars rather than do a time trial for no real benefit.
So why did he sign up at all?
To get a track 10k under his belt before Tokyo. As we know, there aren't too many chances to do so. Or maybe he was asked to do so by his sponsor.
Geez, is the standard seriously 30:20? That is NUTS
But it's not really. It's 85 seconds slower than the WR. The men's standard is 49 seconds slower than the WR and it's not proving prohibitive. Plus, the aim is to get people to qualify by ranking. Arguably, he standard should be even harder

If the foreign athletes are only popped in their home country what does that say about the american athletes. At least the foreign athletes have a risk of getting popped. Agree that NCAA should start proper testing.
I was at the meet tonight and during the men’s 10k it was dead. I think the 95% high school meet deterred the track fans away. I feel like the meet has lost its pro feel

Elise didn’t look good at all tonight. Kind of like how she looked at Millrose and indoor USA’s. I’m being honest when I say she was crazy to pick Cornfield to coach her. Maybe when Smith is officially Swoosh TC she will just let Smith make the calls. Otherwise it might get worse.
I can't wait to see what Graham Blanks can do once he's graduated and is living at altitude. 26:57 guy still in college doing a bunch of the work for a sub-27.
Graham Blanks is signing autographs and taking photos with fans.
Fan: "You have the best personality of any distance runner."
Graham: "Thanks. But I'd gladly trade my personality for a better kick."
Yes, he really said that.
Haha. So funny that you posted this. That was me. And I was wearing a Graham Blanks shirt made by our very own Rojo (thanks, Rojo). Blanks signed the shirt. His response to my statement was, "Thanks. I'd gladly trade the personality for a 400 meter kick though."
Pretty sure saw two runners running down the homestretch as the race started. Not sure what just happened
Just a guess, but they may have been Bekele & Maggard who got left behind at the gun.
May explain Bekele's opening 73 and Maggard's opening 84 (DNF'd at 3200).
I still have that recurring nightmare, I'm climbing down a wall clinging to a cargo net. Then I have to sit down to tie my spikes on and remove my sweat pants when suddenly the starting gun goes off. Anyone else have that nightmare?
Oh, and the track is hilly and curvy like a BMX track.

I didn't make it to the line one time for an xc meet and had to sprint for 10 seconds to catch up to the field after the gun went off.

Now that I think about it, I completely missed the start for an outdoor 5000 once, the meet director/coach at the host school let me run the flat 3000 since I'd already payed and what not. I ended up 2nd in the 3000, would have won the 5000 at that meet.
The xc meet I finished 10, probably would have been a couple places up.
There have definitely been road races where I barely made it to the start too or even started a ways back in the first corral.
It does freak me out that I'll miss a race by not being on the line in time, but I usually don't have nightmares about it day to day lol.

I think we will see NCAA 10k and 5k records get crushed this season, the 5k could fall a few times and I wouldn't be surprised to see the 10k fall again.
Also, I'm excited to see what Blanks will do in the coming months. Last year he had a pretty significant injury ahead of track.
BoomShakaLaka must be absolutely loving the fall of the Fox.
Once you emerge Fox, you’d be best off going back to the BoomShakalaka with your tail between your legs and beg for a job as water boy on the BestAthletics team.
Or maybe you could hand out Anyas or Flobergs bottles for them.
