I don't really agree with it not being a focus, it was paced for 4:02/4:03 which would gave been a big PR.
Simpson record splits:
47.72, 65.36, 64.78, 62.05
Tuohy
47.75, 65.25, 67.70, 67.60
9n the recording, the In stadium announcer said she was on pace for the record at some point early in the race and she was pretty much exact.
I think they were going for major PR or the record. It didn't happen for whatever reason but it's good to try.
This is very telling…clearly she was emulating the Simpson pace for the starting 800 and something kept her from finishing strong. She’s shown the ability to finish much stronger. I wish they would let her prep with the guys, like the pros do. I saw Monson prep with a guy prior to her AR record run. Time to shake things up a bit. If you can’t find two gals that can let Katelyn string two 2:09’s together in practice get one or two or the guys to assist. Otherwise, it might be necessary for KT to consider a change in order to progress…some of the more progressive HS’s do it. That’s how Simpson progressed as rapidly as she did.

This is what I don't like about the Tuohy fans. "Something kept her from finishing strong". It's not rocket science, the pace was too fast for her, she's not fast enough, she blew up and didn't have enough left at the end of the race. Doesn't mean she won't ever get there. But there is all this "entitlement" that says she has already "earned" Jenny Simpson's record, and the other records. I'll celebrate it when it happens! If she hasn't run the PR, than she is not "entitled" to it. Nothing is a given. Why are we giving her the credit for it when she hasn't done it yet. She has to prove it first. Period.

She did not "blow up" as starting at 800 each 200 split was identical 33.5-34. But it did seem she could not sustain the sub 33s.
There is something else odd in that 30 min after this 1500 she ran 15:50. Not that 15:50 is great but as I recall that is all she managed a year ago 2 hours after the 4:06.8

I think she just didn’t quite have it for whatever reason, realized it right around 800 that she was working too hard to continue on with a record or PR attempt and then made the conscious decision to go to plan B and conserve enough to hold on for the 1500 qualifier and also have something left to pick up the 5k qualifier shortly after. Accomplish these tasks for now and then try again at a later time for PRs or records.

I think the poster that you responded to was just suggesting some changes to Tuohy’s training and was not assuming she is entitled to anything. I think very few people on here actually think that way.
Based on her indoor performances I believe a new PR of around 4:02-4:03 would have been more realistic. 3:59 was a stretch. She had a long layoff with no racing since mid March. No way to know if that was planned or if there was some type of setback.

Are you saying that she didn't run the whole race as fast as she could? That she conserved just to hit marks for this meet? If that's the case, then I don't like her style. Racing is for racing, to do the BEST you can that day, whatever the circumstances are, I don't like this "I just ran this as a work-out" mentalility, to me that's poor sportmanship and an insult to the fans and other runners out there, especially the ones that beat her. Also that's not really what it looked like in the 1500, she was visibly struggling, not cruising it in. I think she did run as fast as she could for the 1500 and paid for going out too fast on the back end of the race. And yes, that much of a positive split on a second 800 to me is a blow-up for such a short race at this level of competition. I don't know WHAT happened in the 5k, but I think it's a wasted opportunity if she just "cruised" that race for a qualifying mark as well rather than racing for racing sake. Again, to me that would be like a basketball team "holding-off" on scoring points on another team because they deem the match is "not worth" their best effort for the day. I see/hear that too often in running, again, think this is poor sportsmanship and not worth the fan's or the other team's time. There is no honor there.

Completely agree. I hope that she didn't just "give-up" and decide to cruise because she knew she wasn't going to PR. That is not the way to run and is a poor mentality to have, because that will just promote this idea in her mind that anything less than a perfect race she should give-up and cruise in. Racing is supposed to be painful and hard. Someone else posted here that she was "smiling" in the 5k. That's ridiculous. Racing should be hard and it should be about running as fast as you can and competing as hard as you can for that day, again, otherwise that's an insult to both the fans and the people she was running against in that race. Now if there was something physically wrong that prevented her from pushing harder in that race and it came from the 1500, that's a different story and she probably should not have been running that 5k at all. If nothing is physically wrong and that's just where she is right now in the season, and that was her max racing effort for the day, then something is very off with her.

A bit dramatic, eh? OF COURSE just getting a qualifying time is a big part of the strategy at some meets. We just saw the entire OK state women's team do just that in the 10k a few weeks ago. It is not a new thing.
Yes and I think it is done too much and it is ruining the sport. Giving anything less than your best on race day is poor sportsmanship, and there is no other sport where I see a team doing that. Maybe a team will sub-in players that are not on their usual starting line-up to give them play time in a less than crucial game, but regardless, whatever players are on the court or field playing, no matter the circumstances, they are giving it their all, every time. I really do not like seeing this in American running. I am not watching races to watch work-out, I am watching for racing and racing is about giving your best.

I think people just get really tired of people on here making ridiculous claims like she is going to crush established elites like koko (since been deleted posts) or giving a stream of excuses if she falls below expectations = constantly bringing up an old injury which BTW every runner deals with. I like KT- can't stand most her fans on here. Semi aka need 4 speed should be banned AGAIN
Excuses? She has four NCAA individual titles so far, two team titles, and three official NCAA records. And yes that is after recovering from surgery. You want to know what's more annoying? The complete stupidity that occurs whenever she has a slightly off race and the circlejerk that occurs when a couple of disgruntled losers keep spamming under different screen names with their inane comments. She had a race coming off a layoff where it wasn't her night and she ran slower than her goal. That's all.
Semihaze should not be banned. Let people speak freely. KT is outstanding and viewed as being gracious. Going all the way back to high school days she’s not gracious in defeat as we saw last week. It’s easy to be kind and wait at finish line when you win. She’s stormed off the track into the locker room as a high schooler when losing. Now, people in college are closing the gap on her. Look for more moments of frustration to come out. Runners are adjusting and the pattern of all NC State runners running slower as they getting older is concerning and demands honest reflection and adjusting. She will be great but needs to lose in order to readjust.
KoKo is not washed up…. Sure she is 5 years older than KT and KT could be so much better, in the meantime she will probably have every distance NCAA record from 1500 to 10,000. Right now she owns the mile and 3,000 record. always remember the one thing you can never get back is time. KoKo is 26 leave her alone

Doesn’t even bother me that KT is angry after losing or even storms off. Frankly, it’s more genuine than what we’ve made her out to be. Americas sweetheart who cheers on all women. Losing badly like this week against people she should have beat reveals the more REAL side of her. This is what is need for her to go to next level. It’s been arrogant for us fans to think that the other runners would just assume the loss against her. The tide is turning we need to see the less commercial Adidas side and the more street fighter side. No smiles, no “I’m just glad to run with my teammates” the soul searching side.

I understand the frustrations as a fan, but the seasons are geared towards nationals. We see it all the time on the men's and women's side. (Drew Bosley?) And throughout the entire XC season in most regular season meets (as a fan I also find that frustrating in XC).. However, nationals is the focus for most coaches and runners. Taylor Roe has done it twice this season already, 5k & 10k. She is one of my favorite athletes and I do not think less of her because of it.
Fwiw I think Tuohy *was* racing hard in the 1500m, but probably just going for the Q in the 5k. There was no video though so just speculation
