He was not attacking police or starting violence when they violently assaulted him and put him in the hospital. Their attack on him was unjustified and nearly deadly.

I don't vote for a ticket, but generally vote republican 80-90% of the time in any given election. However, I will not vote for Trump, but I also don't consider him a republican. From what I understand "defunding" actually means reprioritizing budget items related to public safetey and may not result in reductions in the police force.
The general public isn't going to support dismantling police forces in their communities. I think there is great support for a multitude of serious reforms but extremists suggesting we can "defund" the police are going to have the public moving back in the direction of the GOP no matter how repugnant their current leader might be.
