I think everyone knows that in athletics, and specifically in xc/tf, there absolutely is often discrimination against white males. To deny this is to either be ignorant or a liar.
It is happening often, not for every hire, but for many hires, and for more all the time. So the real question is, do you support discrimination? Are you for equal opportunity and equal consideration for all humans, based on qualifications and fit, or are you for discrimination and identity hiring? Fairness, or "the white guy has had it good for too long and now needs to be punished!"
Sadly, not only is XC/TF used to get minority and gender hiring quotas because they are sports that aren't cared about much, they are also the primary target for AD's because 1 hire counts on the books as 6 Head Coaches. If a school has men's and women's xc, itf and otf, they get to count each head coach of each of those sports separately, even if it is the same person. So a single black female hire counts as 6 black head coaches and 6 women head coaches for the athletic department. It's basically a way to cheat the system and relieve the pressure to have to hire as many women and minorities for other sports in the department. So you guys that are all "yeah, down with the white guy!" and "it's about time minorities and women get all these jobs!" are actually cheering for a system that is both discriminating against white guys in XC/TF, and discriminating against women and minorities in the other sports on a campus.
And I will say that I have an extensive and highly successful NCAA I resume with many years of coaching experience. I applied for the Ohio job. My resume and experience is at least 10x stronger than the person they hired. I didn't get an interview. I applied for another job recently that I would be shocked if anyone at my level of experience applied for, much less 3-5 people at my level. No interview. I heard through the inside that they are almost finished with the hire. I don't know who or if they are a minority or female, but I will be shocked if that isn't the case. It will be known soon.
So with vastly superior experience, results, etc I cannot get an interview as a while male, while at Ohio for example they offered five women before they got one to take the job.
And I'm not saying I should be hired for any position. A hiring decision is a combination of qualifications and culture fit. I have no problem with a hiring decision to go with a slightly less qualified person because they fit better. I actually don't even have a problem with a decision to hire a minority or a woman simply because all things were pretty much equal. But no matter what anyone says, it isn't a fair system when I can't get an interview simply because I am a white male, even though I'm for more qualified.
