I have started spoofing Mimi Anderson's transcon run on Strava to show that it is easy to spoof Strava data and why it clearly cannot be a primary source of proof without other strong evidence. Please post to the URC Facebook thread so they know to read it. I tried joining in the past but got banned from there.

Is it possible to spoof the original data on the watches? I doubt that anyone certifying this run will use Strava as a source.

Gareth Bradley FYI, they are now providing evidence on how to spoof strava data. As someone has mentioned on the post, until the code is available to read (Usually via an open source route like Github or Bitbucket), this doesnt prove anything. I would personally like to see the code itself to see what it is doing.

The code is actually a process. It is not something that belongs on Github. That much is obvious. This Gareth Bradley is not qualified to review the "code" and pass judgement.

Actually, it is pretty much just code. The only process part is using Strava to plot a route or find an existing track as a starting point for the algorithms to run through. The code takes literally just a single second to spoof something.

I don't think I will be releasing the source code at this time since this tool is so easy to use and so fast to create a convincing spoof that it will be abused by who knows how many people. The main part of the code with the algorithms is pretty compact and potentially I could explain how it works in general.

Mimi Anderson should apply for a Guinness World Record for running 60 miles in a single day at a low temperature of -75 and at a high of 110. That 185 range has to be the greatest of all time.

Maybe you should discuss it with Strava. They should pay you to help them provide more secure data. Long ago, Microsoft Office was hack for passwords for documents. Adobe PDFs were also hacked. All you had to do was open the documents as text files and the password was on of the first things shown.

It is time for Strava to hack-proof their data.

It's also a problem that these stops don't show up in Mimi's Strava since her data is set as long runs instead of race. So somebody looking at her data wouldn't know.

Interesting that it can be done though, I guess that's something Strava better get onto or everyone is going to be claiming 12 hr 100 mile times

Unfortunately, there is no real way to prevent this kind of spoofing short of building tamper proof hardware encryption chips into GPS watches that digitally sign the data.
