You work with a great man like Kelly Sullivan and you get a job! To coaches in the know, many of these hires make perfect sense. Good, positive people who are in this business for love not money and have put themselves in a good place to jump through the door when it opens up. Travis will do a fine job at Idaho!

Its like we are in the twilight zone. Inexperienced coaches are gaining full time positions at and alarming rate and experienced coaches with have to take GA, part time jobs or choose to not coach. Most of the hires I've seen have been connection hires. Being able to actually coach means nothing anymore. Just get your level 1 and 2, go to conventions and meet people.

Most Athletic Directors today are business men who don't know anything about non-revenue sports and don't want to know about them. So head track coaches can skate under the radar and keep their six figure jobs by hiring inexperienced coaches.
Once they get an experienced coach who knows how to make champions, the head coach is now on the A D's radar as they are now rocking the boat, i.e, more money to send studs to bigger meets, press on campus interviewing the X C team instead of their 5-7 football team, parents calling the A D about asking why their child is not competing... head coaches are not stupid. If I was in that situation, I would do the same, just stay out of the bottom of the conference.
I am shocked that they would hire Floeck over McCurry. McCurry could have been one of those hires that takes a program to unprecedented heights. With the VERY limited resources that he is provided at his current school, he really has done quite a bit.
From my understanding, more than a few runners at Idaho were excited about the possibility of getting McCurry as the distance couch.

Interesting he went from second choice for director to not being a choice at all, from what you make it sound like. My guess is that you are trying to make yourself seem some what important, "runner up." In 6 words and one abbreviation, you already made me feel like you are probably a douchenozzle, so I can see why you didn't get hired.

Every opportunity in life is about relationships. Girlfriends don't find boyfriends out of a catalog, coaches don't recruit athletes based on times alone and you don't get into college without an interview. I'm not a coach but every professional opportunity I've had has been based on a relationship I've developed.
Get out there and shakes some hands. Attend conferences. Meet people.

To all of the coaches that are complaining on here about hiring practices and hires:
If you know that the way to get a job is to be connected and to know the right people, then go out and connect and meet people.
You can't complain that the hiring is not fair, its not fair to you because you don't want to do what is required to get the jobs you want.
I'm a Division I Head Coach and I worked my butt off networking and meeting people so that I would have opportunities when I wanted to move to a new job. I'm Married. I have kids. You can do both and still have a great job.
When I go to hire assistants I'm looking for people with the following qualities:
1) coaching experience
2) someone that I trust that will vouch for your character, coaching expertise, loyalty, etc.
3) ability to grow as a coach and leader
4) Someone that fits my philosophy and the way I run my program.
If I know someone already that I like and trust and have history with that I think fits these criteria, why would I not hire them?
If a close friend or colleague recommends me someone that fits these criteria and they can vouch for them, why would I not hire them?
Every coach on here would rather hire someone that they have good history with or that is highly recommended by someone they trust.
Plenty of people are great coaches and have shady history, back stab their head coaches, look at an assistant job and think how can I replace the head coach, etc.
Don't act like you would not do the exact same thing if you were a Head Coach and hire people based on connections, history and trust.

Nothing in that statement included actual ability to coach or recruits. Athlete progression, athlete retention, athlete gpa. It only said I want someone that won't appar to be a threat to me as a head coach. Not an actual threat but a perceived threat. Has anyone stopped to think that coaches recommend people to them to increase their coaching tree thus they can brag about how many coaches they sent to better positions thus allowing them to hire coaches at a lower price to maximize the amount of coaches they can have on staff. Like I said, being able to actually coach means nothing anymore and networking should not be more important than ability to do the job. Coaches need to stop being so insecure. I did mention those things. I look for coaching experience (i'm not hiring someone that has been lots of places and not done anything!(, I also said I'm looking for someone who can go grow as a leader and as a coach.
So yes, I am very interested in those things. Athlete GPA is on the athlete, not the coach. If a kid does now want to be a student, no one I hire is going to change that.
Certainly I am not going to hire someone that I perceive to be a threat, who would? I am happy to hire people that are enthusiastic and work hard for me and I would then recommend them for any job they wanted and, if possible, look at ways to promote them within my staff.

I wonder how many HC did schemes to get their HC titles.
I personally was forced out of my position by HC to make room for assistants who had no experience and no ability to grow as leaders, just members of the cliche. and the athletes are suffering at the hands of these so called "coaches".
good coaches can and should have an impact on athletes academic motivation and performance.

The team GPA has plenty to do with the coach. It's not hard to tell who will take school seriously during the recruiting process. If it's a true priority, then that's who he'll sign.
