You mean the Mark Wetmore that spent several years coaching a club and 14 years coaching high school before he started his first college coaching job at Seton Hall?
The young coach hired at Delaware deserves no blame here. I hope he does well and makes the most of a good opportunity. But part of the job of a Director involves hiring coaches. Many in this industry don't seem to do much due diligence with that process. Too many positions are filled because someone is convenient or because their buddy recommended them.
If I were an AD (granted I care about Track & Field) I would absolutely question why there were somehow no good candidates that had more experience or a more in-depth relationship to our sport.
You mean the same Mark Wetmore that just hired his sports info guy (with zero background in the sport & zero coaching experience) to replace Billy Nelson as his assistant distance coach?

Yea that guy. He was a kids coach first. Then he was a parents of kids coach. Dude wasn’t even a distance runner . Deal with it V
They hired a 2:11 800 meter male who ran an ice rink last year with 0 coaching experience as a D1 assistant? Insane
Prior to his time with the cross country and track & field program, Bamforth this past year working at the University of Delaware Ice Arena as a supervisor.
In addition, he spent the past two seasons as a track & field coach with Wilmington Friends School. In Wilmington, Bamforth was the head coach of the middle school team, and an assistant coach with the high school teams.
Bamforth is no stranger to working with UD athletics. He spent time as a student manager for Delaware men's basketball team for the 2019-2020 season, and was the equipment manager manager for the football team in 2021.
He graduated from UD in 2021 with a bachelor's of science degree, majoring in sports management.

And people wonder why our sport sucks at the bottom.
This has got the be the 2nd most ludicrous hiring after the hiring of the head coach who only had two years experience. I know two people who applied for that job that had more experience and better record then the entire staff. When reading the article to my wife who is not a coach her response was "are they sleeping together?"
I don't believe his athletic ability has anything to do with his coaching ability... maybe just touching on his lack of experience is enough but hey... whatever you need to do to fuel your ego buddy
Not sure why a team that seems to be wanting a track and field program has now two of three coaches on staff with with limited coaching experience and primarily distance as a background.
The Bison men's and women's track & field programs have added Drew Jones as an assistant coach for the throwing events, director of track & field and cross country
Assist the Head Track and Field Coach with all aspects of the track and field program including coaching student-athletes in the area of horizontal and vertical jumps, throwing events, and multi-event areas. Identifying and r...

I mean it shows an extra level of incompetence if he can't even make it all 4 years if college running.
Just an added bonus to his extreme lack of experience
I definitely get where the frustration comes from with some of you regarding inexperienced hires, but let's not act like there is still a ton of great options at this point with xc starting up in the next couple of weeks.

I don't really think that's an excuse. Additionally there's been a bunch of those type of hires throughout the summer unfortunately. This one is just especially bad even in comparison. Any time you're listing "ice rink manager" on a bio you shouldn't be coaching a division one track team

I see this position all the time on this thread. Most of the time the answer is because the position does not pay enough for a "good" coach to want it, or the city/town/location sucks. Its not hard to realize this. Some of these candidates probably are the best candidate that applied for the job.
