I want to expound. This position isn't anything amazing, but his job before this was as an academic advisor at another school. All the power to him, I'm just jealous.

Yea, that will keep the sport heading in the right direction, a bunch of suck ups who can't coach a lick ruining athletes for years to come. It is getting worse each year, used to be coaches were hired on merit, not anymore.
The club system will win out over these suck ups, might take 10-20 years but the collegiate system will fall apart.

Look, but are you all surprised? This lady is about to get the Ax. I could easily name 15 mid major coaches that can out coach anyone at Tenn and whose teams will destroy them. But here’s another truth, a damn good coach doesn't want this position. He wont have a say in any of the training of these teams. His only job is to recruit and hopefully these runners are getting hip to the fact that you do not improve at UT.

The moment I graduated decades ago I realized the only thing that mattered was who you know. Something tells me people figured this out sometime between inventing fire and the wheel. Never going to change. If and when NCAA track/XC fall apart, the club system will work the same way. Because everything works the same way. So I puckered up, grabbed the lube and been gargling balls ever since…and it’s paid off handsomely. If you can’t beat’em (which you won’t)…join’em. And guess what, Beth will get another very good job immediately because she’s a successful well-respected director by the people pulling the strings who’s had success everywhere…just not up to an SEC standard at Tennessee apparently. Hopefully more of you will have accepted how this works by the time Sarah Pease jumps from head coach/director at Ohio into a well-paying P5 assistant position in a few years after managing the impossible dumpster fire she’s inherited. But something tells me this thread won’t have lmao.

This post wins the thread and the entire internet. Folks on here acting like being great at networking and coaching are mutually exclusive. It's a PEOPLE connection business and the people who are both driven and socially and emotionally effective are the high achievers in this business. You can be a genius on training, periodization etc., but if you cannot connect with recruits and those who make staffing decisions, it doesn't matter. Social and emotional intelligence are equally, if not far more relevant to occupational success in EVERY job. Don't like it? Cool, but don't complain when people who get it succeed when you do not. That's the way life happens. If you want to win the game, you need to know the rules. Took me decades to figure that one out.

I’m gonna keep it short for you guys because I struggled with understanding this too. Connections help you get the job. You can get connections a few ways. 1. Having had a decent running career, 2. Knowing some great runners/coaches, or 3 and most popular is not having 1 or 2 and just going around kissing lots of arse.
The connection whatever is it, helps you GET the position. Depending on the position, your ability to coach helps you keep the job and/or get a higher position. Some cases that doesn’t matter if you’re a certain gender or the program cares less about performance.
You have to be able to hustle as a recruiter, get them on campus and have a personality make them laugh be a real person you’ll land most of them unless the school just isn’t the right fit.
I’ve lost out on many positions to less deserving ppl but you don’t have the player you hate the game. But, in the long run seeing your programs success and their top runner being as good as your 5th, that stuff make those past Ls not feel so bad.
