Just as an interesting fact. I heard a girl who goes to a socially forward high school in ct and competed against the athlete in question say to her coach "omg there was a boy in my heat." after being told that the athlete is transgender reported that she was "so triggered" because the athlete was so clearly a boy. I understand and I stand by the social aspects of transgender. In fact, I think that it should be supported.

However, we are at a cross road.

We make only open division, and bio-females never win. We make an open division and bio-females, there is still labeling going on and it makes the bio-female division lessened.

We make multiple divisions for males, female, transitioning. Aren't we then labeling the individual and are like hey look at the boy/girl running!!!!

We don't allow wheelchaired athletes to compete with able bodied runners in boston. They didn't choose to be in a wheelchair. Why are they not afforded the same leniency?

I for one am on the side of the females. It is coming to the point that being transgendered is like winning the athletic lotto. I can't imagine this is what is best for the sport.

I am a Connecticut athlete and I was there for the championships. I am almost positive that he wasn't going all out. In the 200, he pretty much just jogged the first 100 and was in last place and then with 100 to go, he started sprinting and won by a small margin.

Wheelchair category is a bit different as they are in a sort of machine. But maybe you could make the sport go Wacky Races style with wheelchairs spring loaded shoes, EPO, L carnitine infusion bags, the whole lot in one big open competition.

That aside, for able bodied competitors, the sport now definitely should be made open competition only to get rid of this transgender controversy - we should be judging people as human beings and evaluating their athletic and work performances as such and not be prejudiced by gender or age. Just run more heats at meets to give as many competitors a chance of running their best.

What is fascinating is that idealogues on both ends of the political spectrum ultimately deny the ultimate adversary of their fairy-tale psychologies: biology. The right denies that we are animals subject to the process of evolution, while the left denies that gender is a biological characteristic not a psychological preference.

The right-wingers still have the upper hand though: they deny the fact of death of the individual, no matter their "faith" in eternal life.

I really like your description of these ideas/situations/struggles as messy and the juxtaposition of shame/fairness.

It's also really interesting that sport is "about physical realities" (like a time clock, I assume) while much of social and cultural life is much less quantifiable. I wish you edited this website (even though I think you and I would disagree about almost all of our conclusions), because this post about sport and culture really helps outline the stakes and topics of this issue.

Of course you're not sure of the answer. Accepting the delusions of the post-Modernist left has rendered you unable to practice simple logic. Why do you fear and hate simple logic?

As adults who have to provide guidance and structure for young people, for those of us who coach track, compete in the sport or simply use common sense, the answer is easy.

Here's how it would work if grown ups were in charge.

Boy walks up to coach. "Coach, I want to compete on the girls team."

Coach: "You're a boy."

Boy: "No. I've come to conclude that I'm truly a girl."

Coach: "How do figure that?"

Boy: "My mom and dad tell me I can be anything I want. I'm a girl."

Coach: "Call yourself whatever you want. You're a boy. You have physical advantages over women due to that inescapable fact. It would be unfair to any girls you would compete against. A mediocre high school boy is likely to be better than the best girls, simply because he has the physical advantages of being a boy. We divide competition by sex for that reason. We have a boys team. If you'd like to compete, compete with those with the same physical advantages."

Boy: "It's not fair. I'll tell my parents. We'll all make a fuss."

Coach: "No."

AD: "No."

Principal: "No."

School Board: "No."

State Governing Body: "No."

But apparently wisdom, logic, common sense and justice are trumped in Connecticut by the lunacy you've accepted that makes you unable to be sure of an answer. You're unable to come to the simplest, most obvious and just conclusion because you've bought into a philosophy that is so evil and bereft of sense that you are now incapable of making even the most obvious conclusions.

This will stop happening if women stop running so slow. I understand that women don't run as fast as men because they don't emphasize sports/competition as much as men, but if they start, then there will be no incentive for men to run on the women's side.

You should never suggest, let alone require, a child to take drugs to compete.

The simpler solution is to have two classes of competition - open and female.

That allows transgender athletes of any orientation to compete in the open sections.

Nobody wants to require this kid to take drugs. If he competed in the boys race, then he could simply be himself and would not be required to take any drugs.

The problem is that transgender people are trying to reverse something that they cannot control(unless somehow we discover a way to re-do birth). For example: You are born a boy. If you want to be a girl, I say fine. If you want to run in the same race as girls, I say fine to that too. But your mark only counts as a transgender, like it or not, call it unfair-that is the truth. The transgender placing needs to be in a separate category. Their place should not count in the girls, because they are transgenders, which aren't girls. The transgender is declared a winner in the transgender category(in this case boy to girl). That is the only solution-that way both girls, boys, and all transgenders still win their category. I could see the transgender saying they won the girls, but no one can deny the fact that they are a transgender-which is not a girl.

Personally, I've always believed there is something that these transgenders are not understanding-life is unfair at times. What about people who wish they were born with "perfect genes" to be a professional athlete? Or if people wish they were born taller? You can't control your genes or your birth. Most people accept that. It's interesting we are now in a day and age where people think that their sex birth is wrong. Why now? I'm all for equal rights, which means the biological GIRLS need to be treated EQUALLY too.

ITBS I agree. I forgot to include my final point. What I meant to sum up with is that, ultimately, we are left with the most appropriate and simplest way to handle this situation is to stand with the biological factor and have athletes race against those of the same sex rather than gender. And tell those in an appropriate way, we are sorry but it isn't fair to all competitors.

A potential solution could be something like 2 divisions, one for people born male, and one for people born female. I do agree- no one should expect society to cater to their exact desires. I don't think anyone has a fundamental "right" to participate in whatever track division they want.

We, as society, need to protect children and young people from those who encourage and exploit gender confusion. Many children and young children go through periods of confusion relating to their identity, the changes their body is undergoing, and even identifying more with the opposite sex for a time, but it shouldn't be used by those wanting to promote themselves as right-on liberals as a cause. Sympathy and understanding - yes, changing gender - no, not unless it is product of several years of identifying as the opposite sex, preferably with non-biased therapy.

We also need to protect the girls (and it is always girls) who are having their athletics promise diminished by sopping to one individual.

Older men who wish to change gender - by all means do so, although personally I am suspicious of the motives. It must be a hell of a lot easier to get attention sexually if you are naturally taller and leaner than the average.

In the UK, there was the case of Lauren Jeske, jailed for attempted murder on a UK athletics official who was investigating whether her trail running titles should be taken away from her because she has stopped taking hormone suppressing medication in order to race.
