How would you have any idea? You're probably just a JV Johnnie runner that struggles to break 30 min. in the 8k. Yes, you run to get better, because why continue a sport if you don't strive to improve? Sure, 30 minutes isn't that good in the 8k, but why do you care? You know you aren't that great, but having the support of your teammates, even Chris Erichsen, makes a 30 sec. improvement special, even if it is 30:00 to 29:30 instead of 25:30 to 25:00. You train to your full capacity just as the greats of the MIAC run to theirs, and they respect you for it, as you respect them. So while this thread may have "Johnnie bias" because a couple of Johnnies who "struggle to break 30 min. in the 8k" like to make predictions on a message board, remember this: we're all runners, well I hope at least, we all train hard, and we all have predictions that in the end, mean absolutely nothing. So disagree with the Johnnie bias and make your own predictions, but don't degrade the person that is making the predictions because he might not be as good. He didn't choose SJU for the running, trust me.

Sorry, but there is no way can you hold running fitness from just biking. If you are a low 25 8k guy normally, the best you could do with just biking is probably a low 27. Now if you are able to get even a little running in, that is a different story.

biking will get you alot better off than you might think. maybe not if you are used to 150 miles per week, but ive ran 25:xx with only bike training for a few months. ran maybe 3 times. i guess if you need over 100 mile weeks to run fast, biking probably wont do it, but if you can run fast off 50 a week, you can run fast with just biking. plenty of guys have done it, dont say it cant be done.

What is the deal with everyone predicting Stenbrecher beating Murphy?

because its the one and only race where steinbrecker actually runs well. its his one day in the year where he can run about 20 places better than usual.

I don't know why everyone is hating on Steinbrecher. He consistently runs well at all the big meets. 2 Time All Conference for CC and placed pretty well last track season too.

Gamble was 6th in the conference 5,000m this year and the otehr 2 placed very well in the steeplechase. The 6th place 5,000m runner should have a chance at top 25 in the 8K. Steeplechase takes a lot of endurance too and the kind of people who do that often are good at cross country too.

I agree, all-conference steeplechasers should not be written off. Wegmann is the #3 returning steeplechaser behind Erichson and Jon Murphy. He was 27th at conference last year, and has shown improvement this year. He definitely has a shot at top 15, as do 3-4 other Mac guys.

Jim Drews Invite – Wisconsin-La Crosse (3), St. John’s (7), Wisconsin-Platteville (8), Nebraska Wesleyan (17), Wartburg (22), Hamline (34), St. Olaf

Should be an exciting weekend with big name competition. Bethel returns to Brooks where they had one of their best meets last year, placing 13th in a field stuffed with nationally ranked teams, just 20 points behind Carleton. On a very fast course, Greeno was 17th in 25:19, Gladitsch 34th in 25:37. Willy Kaul of Oshkosh won it last year in 24:21, Calvin won, NYU was 2nd. Macalester will be looking to challenge a couple of the ranked teams, as will Bethel.

At Drews the big buzz is Mitch VanBruggen may be returning to action for St. John's. If he's in good shape, this could be their big chance to close the gap on La Crosse and show they're contenders for top 4 at nationals. Hamline has also been on the upswing, so they'll be eyeing Wartburg. Last year John Moore of Portland won it in 24:09, with Div I Wisconsin winning, Portland 2nd, Minnesota 3rd, La Crosse 4th, Hamline 5th, Wartburg 8th, St. John's 9th, NB Wesleyan 10th.

I heard Vanbruggen is not racing this season. I heard from a Johnnie runner that he is not in the best shape either anyway.

I can't remember exactly how he finished last year, but I'm just guessing Kelly Fermoyle from Saint John's will be running again.

La Crosse 1st, Iowa Central 2nd, Platteville 3rd, St. John's 4th, NB Wesleyan 5th, Wartburg 8th, Luther 9th, Hamline 10th, St. Olaf 12th, Gustavus 17th, Augustana 18th. Tyler Sigl won in 24:55, Chris Erichson 2nd in 25:00.

Seems like most the MIAC underperformed, except St. Olaf did as well as expected. VanBruggen did run, as St. John's #7, 94th in 27:40. First race off injury is always hard, he may improve a lot by regions if not conference.
