Fisher and Nico 2-3 at Worlds? What a world we live in.
With Jakob hurt the US has a legitimate shot at sweeping the medals in a distance event. What a concept. Never thought I'd see the day. Nico (and Blanks) ran incredibly well. Nico especially has looked like a battle-hardened veteran this year. 12:45 DL win in Oslo is quite the global breakout race. He went through 3k not even 10s off his current 3k "PR"

Quite shocking to see an American win a Diamond League 5000m at Bislett. It harkens to the day of Falcon's surprise win in the Dream Mile in 1991. Well done to your man.
I know this sounds stupid, but it’s not a guarantee that Jakob could do what Nico just did after running all the rounds of the 1500. Nico is a real contender to win, he closed in 1:54 flat-1:53 high in a 12:45 race.
Nico is a real contender to medal, but I don't see how he wins unless Jakob gets injured again or he falls. Jakob is strong enough to go with (almost)any pace and has a lethal kick against 5k/10k specialists. I could see Nico beating Fisher.
This makes a 13 year span from Gebrhiwet's first to his last sub-12:50, 2012 to 2025. He ran 12:47 in 2012 at Paris, the one fast race in the Mo Farah years, then his next sub-12:50 not until 2018, 12:45, then again in 2021, 12:49, then amazingly, in 2023, a big drop to 12:42, 12:36 last year, and now 12:46. The shoes could account for his return to this terrain in 2021, but not the continued drops.

Respectfully, that’s because it kind of is. For one thing, there’s zero chance Worlds is a 12:45 race, so whether Jakob could do it is irrelevant. Beyond that, though, we’re talking about a guy who ran 3:43 and 7:23 on back to back days, winning both after front-running in hot, windy conditions. The next season, after being unable to race for EIGHT MONTHS due to injury, he demolished the Paris 5k field and ran 7:17 for 3k. Even with the 1500 in his legs, I’m taking him over anyone else in the field and it’s not close.
Nico’s performance today was phenomenal and definitely established him as a medal contender, but there’s a reason Jakob has won 3 times in a row, and it’s not luck. Unless his injury ends up being more severe than we have reason to believe right now, he is still the clear favorite for gold. He’s proven that, at his best, he is head and shoulders above the others.
This just proves Sean Brosnan did not burn out those Newberry Park boys in high school.
What this proves is that:
1) it is obvious how fortunate Newbury Park was to have the Youngs and Sahlmans at the same school, at the same time. What are the odds? Anyone would be hard pressed to find alumni from any high school that have the post high school PR's of these brothers.
2) it is nearly impossible to "burn out" a high school runner when they have Young and Sahlman level talent. It's very difficult to find the ceiling for outliers at the high school level. They handled the very demanding (to say it as nicely as possible) training NP kids endured, but if you look at those outside of the Youngs and Sahlmans, the best case is, a few kids improved slightly, while many others either quit, had career ending injuries or went backwards after high school.
3) Brosnan's training has zero positive impact on what someone who is 5 years removed from high school is currently doing. Nico deserves the bulk of the credit and Mike Smith should share some for doing a great job to take him to the level he is.
Outside of the Youngs and Sahlmans, the story for Brosnan would be very similar to what Doug Soles is criticized for. He squeezed the most out of the bulk of kids in high school and doesn't have a lot to show at the next level. Soles just didn't ever have the good fortune of having total outliers at his school as is the case for most coaches across high school running.
Like 2-3 years ago people were discussing if Nico Young would even be able to go sub 4 in a mile or sub 1:55 in an 800m and now he has one of the best kicks in the distance crowd.
All those "will Nico ever run sub 4" comments are looking real silly now... first he runs the first ever altitude sub 4 and now this

Yeah I don't get that logic. What indicates that Jakob could not do this? His three 5000m golds from global championships where he doubled? His 3k time?
Anyways- we shall all be glad that Nico raced in a Diamond League and not in a GST, I don't think a 13.15 would have sent the shockwaves this victory did.

Your assessment is wrong. On these boards if any prior Newberry Park running doesn't run well then it's because Brosnan burned them out. But when they do perform well then he was lucky to have coached them.
It goes back to the Burrito and deviated conclusions on these boards.

Hand up, I was completely wrong on Nico. He's completely transformed how he runs and become waaaaay more efficient runner. He used to have the crazy headbob and nowhere near the fluidity. Back in the day he stuck out like a sore thumb running other fast guys, but now in the pack he looked as smooth as anyone.
What a stupid comment. This race is not like it is a sub-par field running an off event to look better. It's 4 of the fastest men ever in this event running an event that will (as of recent) be fully recognized for WRs by World Athletics. If there was a Cheptegei - Gebrihwet - Kejelcha - Aregawi - Kiplimo - Haile Bekele - Barega - Fisher Race over 7k or some similar slightly off distance I'm sure you would very much enjoy seeing it.
Note: that theoretical 7k field is 8 of the 11 top fastest 5k guys ever, and I'm pretty sure all of them are still active, which is pretty absurd current depth (I might be wrong on 1 or 2 of them so check me please). 12th is Mo Katir (his result is on WA will it get nullified?) and 13th is now Nico Young after today. We are in a wonderful era of running, just looking at top lists and times and competitiveness. Of course the technology can play some part but this is still very exciting.
