Feels like emerging markets have bottomed and starting to rebound. I added to my position today.

Apparently China is a big stake in those ETFs, so perhaps the anticipated downside of a trade war is now factored in and prices can rise from here.

Equities from China are as much as 32% of the MSCI Emerging Market Index which serves as the index most emerging market ETFs attempt to match. Certainly the escalating tensions of an imminent trade war fueled the drop in the index and the Emer. market ETFs. Since markets are usually forward looking, one may interpret the rebound of the last few days as the point where the bad news (of the trade war escalating tensions) have been factored into the current stock price and the worst may be over. Also, it is understood that the whole of Asia sells components and raw materials to China, so if China gets hurt, a vast section of the worlds emerging market gets hurt. And that was the fear that drove the Emerg. Market indexes and ETFs down these last few months.

OK. It seems however that so many of the popular indices (EEM, SPY, QQQ) are dominated by a handfull of stocks.

Nothing unusual you say. That is simply factually incorrect. When the entire positive performance of an index of 500 companies comes from 10 stocks it is anything but normal.

Even the 6 month CD has moved ahead of France’s CAC at 2.1%. By the way that is above the Dow as well, so down goes the Dow as they say.

The three stocks make up 35 percent, 21 percent and 15 percent of S&P 500 returns, respectively, while making up 41 percent, 21 percent and 15 percent of Nasdaq 100 returns.
