so what cards does Trump have to play? Either negotiate with Putin or continue to watch the war of attrition that Russia will inevitably win.
Not sure but he’s definitely playing the correct ones.
Sit back for seven months while Russia increase attacks on Ukraine since his Inauguration and now go to bat for more territory for Russia. Yep he’s definitely got the right idea.
What's your solution? Ukraine has a manpower issue so do you propose putting European/American boots on the ground?

Boots on the ground, jets in the sky, and tanks on the border. The Russians can walk back to Moscow and share their feelings with Putin at a Romanian Christmas party.

Of course you won't be going and if you got drafted to do this you would flee...
But yea other people's kids should totally have to die so you can virtue signal about a country you'd never even heard of in 2021.
I think Putin wants the same thing as as he has always wanted--Ukraine to give up and give Russia whatever they want. And Putin had Trump echoing whatever Putin said, but then Trump got too far away, and due to his weak memory and his incessant need for flattery, Trump started saying other stuff, like stuff about wanting a ceasefire.
But Putin put Trump back on track, and gave him his marching orders again.
Now we see if Putin's little boy Trump can actually make Ukraine do what Putin wants.
We can see the Europeans have learned that you have to flatter Trump constantly to get his attention--that you have to be careful because his ego cannot handle any type of criticism at all.
The least Trump should do is pose severe economic sanctions if Putin doesn't stop the bombing of civilians.

Yeah because sanctions totally worked the last 3 years. Trump can't destroy Russia's economy with the snap of the finger.

Quite possibly the worst performance by a US leader in international diplomacy since GHW Bush barfed on Japan's auto executives. Trump went to Alaska and simply melted in Putin's presence. All the tough talk about what would happen if Putin did not agree to a cease fire evaporated. He comes out of a three hour meeting with Putin and no longer is even pushing for a cease fire. He gets no concessions from Putin. Instead, Trump agrees with Putin on Crimea and NATO membership and looks to force Zelensky to agree to that without getting anything in return. It is like going in to buy a car and telling the salesman you won't agree to pay MSRP because you want to pay more without ever trying to negotiate down from MSRP. Putin gets to visit Russia, red carpet laid out by US soldiers, photo ops with Trump and a press conference where Putin takes over and Trump barely speaks. Bucket loads of propaganda to take home and make Russians think that Putin has Trump wrapped around his finger.
If there was ever any inkling of a slight sign from a few weeks back that Melania had actually given Trump a spine to get him to pressure Putin to end the war, the meeting in Russia completely snuffed that out.
Ultimately, this is a decision that can only be made by President Zelenskyy and by the people of Ukraine, working also together and in agreement with President Putin," Mr. Trump

No, it's a decision that can be made with the allies of Ukraine - who are vastly superior to putin.

That's literally all you do. Although I will concede I'm not certain you wet your bed.
