But very quickly everyone knew that for whatever reason the Notre Dame administration decided to lowball the position. This is an embarrassment. A athletic department that is flush with cash could have had a nice salary for both head coach and assistants. And yes, Sparks is known through the coaching profession as a negative recruiter and backstabber. That goes way back to his early days. Matt Sparks is making over 100k. Though probably not by much. This is about what Alan Turner & Joe Paine made. The assistants make somewher in the ball park of the mid 40’s. That’s a lot more than it used to be. Jim Garnham was almost fired on multiple occasions by Joe & Alan.... All of you people calling this an embarrassment obviously don’t know Notre Dame. As parent of alumni, I do know a little about Notre Dame. I know the school has billions in endowment, sticks it to parents by increasing tuition annually, solicits alumni donations constantly, and makes gobs of money from athletics. They made $135million last year, up 11% over prior year and 42% from 5 years ago.
Yet head coach is making $100k and they are paying assistant coaches $40k? That is pathetic and explains why they’ve promoted an assistant twice in a row. The only person that sees $100k at ND worth the aggravation of the job is the person already willing to do it for $40k.
On a separate note, it must be humbling- if not humiliating- for assistants to help these kids for 4 years and they all enter workforce at 22 earning more than them. Hell, even their scholarships are more than your salary. Shame on ND

This dynamic happens at many other schools as well, especially in the Pac12. We’re the chumps who choose to live life this way...

This is Jim Garnham. Whoever wrote this comment about me almost getting fired at ND by Alan or Joe is completely wrong. At no point was I almost fired... don’t get me wrong, there was some disagreements between us, but a no point was I ever in jeopardy of losing my job.
