I can't believe I'm agreeing with Adult here but- you're right.
Anyone who calls the rockets "glorified fireworks" has no idea how easy it easy to blow oneself up with said fireworks, let alone actual military rockets.
My issue is in proportionality. People are arguing that Israel is acting disproportionately to the situation. I disagree. Essentially the government of Gaza planned and executed a widespread attack against the nation of Israel. They used their military to kill civilians of Israel. How do you, as a nation, prevent that from happening again? You eliminate the threat. This isn’t like a few rogue terrorists went across the border and did stuff on their own volition. The government planned it and targeted the most vulnerable people in Israel. To then say Israel is acting disproportionately seems ridiculous in my opinion.
I hate to break it to you, but there is no government in Gaza lol.. it's run by a terrorist organization - is it that hard to understand. Terrorists commit terrorist acts but democratic governments should not. Do you expect the US president to behave similar to North Korea's leader? Saying it's ok for Israel to commit war crimes because a terrorist organization also did it is insane. And it's disproportional because Hamas did not destroy thousands of homes, hospitals, and other public establishments, and prevent 2 million Israelis from accessing power, water and food. We don't know what the total death and destruction count will be after this, but I guarantee it's not even close to a like-for-like retaliation. You are b@t$hit if you are holding Israel to the same standards as Hamas.
Proportionality doesn’t mean “like for like” or tit for tat. The elected political body of Gaza invaded Israel and targeted civilians killing 1440+ of them. They took over 100 people hostage and committed atrocities that no one should have to endure. The proportional response is ending the ability of Hamas to do that again. The elected political body used their military to attack the nation of Israel . You don’t get to say “hey israel! You killed 1440 of our guys, now you have to stop!”
I'm not interested in who is right or wrong in this whole saga - for me it's just beyond depressing that in the year 2023 this is still going on and humankind still behaves this way.
I thought about it this morning - when we are infants our lives are pretty guarded and protected to the outside world. But at some point the world begins to interest us and we start watching the news or reading a newspaper and I distinctly remember the first example of global conflict I ever came across/learned about was Israel v Palestine. That this sh-t is still going on almost 40 years later, with seemingly absolutely no progress being made on the issue or how it's dealt with is about as big an indictment on the human species as possible.
And what makes it even worse is that all of this irreparable and tangled mess wasn't even created and initiated by Jewish or Arabic people, Israelites or Palestinians and yet here we are. How utterly f---ing ridiculous.
