Iowa State assistant, Cale Wallace, to take over mens distance at Florida State. Expect announcement to come out later this week. Who replaces him in Ames?
No one cares if your happy or not. This is the way it has always been getting into the coaching field since the early 1900's son. You have to EARN your way into the business making low money for years and sacrifice like we have ALWAYS done to work your way up. NOTHING in Life is easy. Quit whining and do some work. This generation.... UGH
You could also afford a house on one income and pay for college by working 1 summer job at McDonalds when you were my age.
I was a broke grad student basically living in an attic and scrapping by to get my first coaching gig. Don't act like younger people aren't willing to make sacrifices. Understand that you grew up in a very different economic landscape. Just showing up and working hard is not the same as it was in your generation.
We have to realize that hiring assistant coaches and hiring head coaches is a completely different process. In my career I’ve only been involved in a comprehensive selection process when I was applying for a head coaching positions. As I head coach I never hired someone I knew I went through the applicants and Interviewed 5. That was 10 years ago things have obviously changed
ADs hire comprehensively
head coaches do not rather hire someone they know or a buddy suggestion.

Nope - Lived off less than $5K for years back in the day. Worked two jobs to make it work for years to put in my time just like you need to do today. NO difference. Quit whining. If you don't like it or are not willing to do what it is needed, do something else. This is the way it is and is not going to change. Deal with it

He's right unfortunately. There will always be someone willing to live a substandard life in order to break into this profession and as long as people continue to fill these jobs, schools will see no need to change anything. It's admirable to want these schools to provide at least a somewhat livable wage but it is a tad unrealistic.

Brian Biekert who coaches at Southern Illlinois and former ISU runner, has informed his team that he will be leaving, so this seems a likely destination.

He’s not qualified for that. But a P4 assistant? Sure. That’s where he’s headed.

You do realize that inflation is a thing right? 5k "back in the day" goes way farther now. Let's say you made 5k in 1980 - that's equivalent to $19k today (way more than I lived off for over 2 years).
And I did put in the work and have since had multiple collegiate director roles. I'm saying to quit complaining that people are advocating for something sustainable just because you had to struggle. Most people have to struggle in this profession. Heaven forbid we as a community try to make it so that young coaches don't have to be starving, childless, and unmarried for years to get a livable wage.
Unless you have a wealthy family taking care of you, most of these job salaries are a joke and unsustainable.
