The issue for the DOJ is whether Trump broke the law and in particular the criminal law. If the evidence convincingly says he did he cannot escape prosecution: the DOJ will be required to bring charges. For the DOJ to do otherwise would be in breach of its statutory role. Any "mea culpas" he might make cannot avoid that; they are effectively an admission of guilt. The only advantage for him would be towards a possible reduction in penalty. But we are left then with a former POTUS with a criminal conviction.
Your penchant for posting flawed legal analysis continues. Even with clear evidence of a crime, the DOJ has prosecutorial discretion in whether to bring charges at all. I'm not aware of any charges that the DOJ is "required" to prosecute and failing to charge someone is not a breach of any statutory role. For example, Hillary Clinton was not charged for having classified information on her private computer network. That is illegal, and she was the beneficiary of prosecutorial discretion and having a high political profile. Donald Trump has undoubtedly benefitted from the same in previous instances.
My point was that if Trump changed his tone, he may still be the beneficiary of some prosecutorial discretion in whether, when, and how he is charged, and what penalty he may receive. He may still never be charged at all because of the prosecutor's discretion, but he is making it more likely that he will by being unable to control his prickish obsessive tendencies. You're sympathetic with that, aren't you?
Clinton wasn't charged because of a prosecutorial discretion; she wasn't charged because of a finding there was a lack of evidence of a crime. That was a determination. The prosecutorial discretion exists because the DOJ has to make an assessment of the strength and seriousness of a case before it decides to prosecute. If the evidence of a crime is clearcut and compelling it would be required to prosecute because to do otherwise would clearly compromise its impartiality, which is a prerequisite for upholding the law and the administration of justice. If it were not so the DOJ would merely be a political instrument akin to its counterpart in China or Russia. But perhaps you believe that - in which case there isn't anything really to choose now between the US and those countries.
Any admission of guilt by Trump would establish the crime was committed without contest. As I said, that could reduce penalty but not affect conviction. To avoid that he would have to show that his actions lacked the necessary intent and were based on a misunderstanding of what the law requires. In other words - he would have to argue that he is a mental incompetent, but not a criminal. That might work.

Burbank, CA is a great place. The homes are beautiful there. The weather is beautiful (though there are some bad smog days for sure). You are close to the ocean, mountains, national parks, etc. Nice slice of suburbia yet close to the bigger sprawling city of LA if you want to do more things. Methinks you've never been to Burbank.
Calabasas, CA is also a target. We shall see. Still a tad less than 5 years away from doing the move, and we haven't written the LA area in stone just yet. I mean, there ARE more natural disasters there than in some other places in the country. Picking a place to retire to doesn't get real until it's upon you.
