Israel/US apparently went through the calculus and decided it wasn't worth the trouble to engage Gaza and go after Hamas. I think they got spooked by Iran's military boldness, the media's 180 flip in coverage, and the sea change in national and international mood which swung way in the direction of anti-Israel/anti-US and to the Islamic Rage. Trump, to his credit, had a lot to do with it. He can still move some minds at will. Who knows where this goes now? Will USA start totally dissembling everywhere?
I'd argue the Rhetoric about leveling Gaza, the defense minister calling them animals, shutting off all water/electricity/food going in, and the bombing of the road out and Egyptian border (though maybe Hamas actually did that?) had a lot to do with the eroding support.

To add, it is an extremely fragile region.. the only ones that were willing to throw the whole thing into total chaos was Israel here. That Hamas successfully carried out this attack was a massive aggravation, but that they wanted to or would have tried is the norm. Israel should have milked US and global empathy and built more international support before implementing a smarter response.
The US probably told them privately that if they invade and cause a full blown humanitarian mess that would get Iran involved (a proxy war in Gaza), that they (or Bibi) could kiss US support goodbye and they folded. The US is more interest in consistent instability... we never want things to get too hot in the region because it could easily spin out of our control.

Wrong. Hamas played this perfectly. They destroyed and looted like 5 Israeli towns, then when Israel got upset, they turned the IDF into Derek Chauvin/Mark Fuhrman in the public eye.
