When Natosha Rogers was moving up I was going bonkers cheering her on. Awesome running. Too bad she doesn't have the time to run in London.

That's a problem with using prior times to pick the team, instead of how well they run in the trials. The same for the favoritism of letting people compete who haven't run the times to be there. Anyway, a very exciting race! I'm happy to be able to see that tonight.

Just announced! Shalane got bumped from the marathon team for losing to a B Standard athlete in the 10k. New rule quietly slipped in by Hightower last year. Huge deal, no one knew it was an issue. Everyone is talking about it in Eugene.

It isn't the US making these rules, the IAAF says that for countries like the US who are sending three athletes, all must have the Olympic "A" Standard.

Runners, like everyone else, respond to incentives. Change the incentives, and you change the behavior.

Since any woman with an A standard knew she didn't couldn't lose to any woman with a B standard, the A women didn't have any reason to beat the women with B standards.

If they did have to worry, they would have tried harder, and Rogers probably wouldn't have been second.

Remember: In tactical races, tactical considerations determine th outcome. And in this case, those considerations implied "It's ok to ignore Rogers."

Sucks for her, but she knew the deal coming in.
