Do you mean about the tie breaker rule?

It's an NCAA rule:

"d. The committee will break regular season ties between teams under consideration for the sole purpose of awarding wins (points) for the at-large selection process.

Ties are not to be broken by meet officials on published results. The committee will apply the tie-breaking procedures outlined below."

Had Columbia and Princeton tied, Princeton would be Ivy League champs as they take the first runner across the line as the tie-breaker. Every spot counts....

"They"? They who? Is that an Ivy League rule? (Could well be--I'm asking, not arguing!)

As far as the *NCAA* is concerned, a tie is a tie (except, as noted above, when it has to be broken for advancement to Nationals). There has been a tie for first at the NCAA championship, IIRC, and both teams were listed as champions. I'm surprised the Ivy League would have a different rule--they could, I'd just be surprised.

Personally, I've always applauded the NCAA's no-tie-breaker (except...) policy. The teams ran, they got scores; if the scores are the same, then the two teams are equally worthy and have earned the same finish position.

Nah. I agree with allowing ties to stand during the regular season (not a big deal), but for a championship? If two football teams were tied at the end of regulation, would you say they're equally worthy of the championship? Or would you go to overtime?

And I'm not sure if I agree with the "best of 5" tie breaker. 6th man seems more fair to me.

Wow, Brown with 3 in the top 10 but not a factor. That sucks. Craig, Willy and Jason all doing a great job coaching... but only 2 to seem to be doing a great job recruiting!

Craig is now in her 5th year at Brown and the program is not any better at all. For all of the hype surrounding her hire and her role at Columbia, Brown is just not that good.

When Craig was applying for the Harvard position a few years ago, people both on her team at Brown AND at Harvard believed she was only going for the position for the prestige factor. Perhaps better salary too, I don't know. But many people on the Harvard were skeptical of her willing to jump ship after only being at Brown for 2 years...

Also, her Brown squad told the Harvard squad of how she plays favorites and pays no attention to the decent and walk ons. So she does not work on the team as a whole, but just trying to make her best people better...

Although I think Bonnette is to some degree responsible for the performance as he is the coach (especially compared to performance under Steve Walsh), concerns surrounding the entire Penn track program (and by extension what is appearing to be a dysfunctional athletic department) is almost worth its own thread. This is a team that was as recently as 2005 in the top half in the league in XC and at that time hadn't placed lower than 3rd at Outdoor Heps in 13 years.

Congrats to Columbia for getting it done.

Have to agree with your assessment of Penn's program. While it has been five years since we visited with my daughter, we were underwhelmed with the coaching staff, save for, ironically, Steve Walsh, the youngest of the staff. We were predisposed to think well of Penn, as my father was a grad, and it is a fabulous school. As these things go, she/we chose another Ivy, and to tie into other comments in this thread, ended up with a coach after a year whose philosophy had so turned us off when considering Columbia. And, of course, Steve left Penn, and then a year later up to Providence, where I have it on good authority he is doing a great job.

In the NY Marathon today Catha Mullen (Princeton '07) was 11th (3rd US) in 02:43:13, her second marathon I believe.1st NY (PR 3:01.52).

Penn took 3rd (behind Princeton/Cornell) in 2007 cross. Bonnete joined the staff at the end of this season and took over distance coaching duties that indoor season. Since then, 0 points in the distances at track heps, and 2 last place finishes at xc heps. This despite typically having the 3/4th best recruiting classes in the league.

Yeah, I'm sure all these highly successful high school athletes that Bonnette recruits are all in fact "v@ginas." Obviously that is the problem. Also, the athletes he didn't recruit (current juniors and older), all of whom have been completely unsuccessful since he took over, are all "v@ginas" as well. Thats an amazing coincidence. I wonder what it is about Penn that interests pussies so much?
