But funny thing - as a rule, it's the part-time recreational runners or non-runners who can't really appreciate the sport and wind up calling a "mere" All-American a "never was." Most truly elite runners view the "lowly" NCAA All-Americans and 4:01 milers as brothers in sport and pretty high achievers.

None of my brothers who have achieved all that (and far more) go on message boards thumping their chests and declaring that they have such rare, special insights they've gained from the oh-so-lofty heights they've been to in their lifetimes. To a man, they at least have enough humility to not stoop to that type of behavior. And, yeah, we're talking at least a couple of levels above conference champion and All-American in college. In any case, Frenetic Fred Samara was an, ummm, "intense" competitor himself. He was highly emotional and used that to fuel his performances. When he was at Penn, they were probably the leading program in the Ivy League; and he was widely disliked for some of his "antics." He was also respected by most as a great athlete and a hell of a competitor.
I guess, upon reflection, that I simply don't know whether the officials made the right call or not. Maybe--I wasn't there, and the officials certainly had a better grasp of the *entire* context of the incident than I.
And it doesn't particularly bother me if the DQ process was started by F. Samara. (Has that even been established?) Coaches are within their rights to protest; it's up to the officials to approve or deny the protest.
What I *do* think is that the Dartmouth team should be officially censured for their booing. There's no call for that. More: You don't want to establish the precedent of booing's having potentially influenced an official's decision.
