Head XC/Track - Southern Utah. Houle built a pretty good distance/mid-d program from what I can tell from the outside looking in. I remember being in college watching Mike Tate and Kasey knevelbaard killing in. Will be interesting to see who takes over! -
May not be good... but to say worst... quite a few other schools in that conference that should be emphasized about how bad they are since they havent even been last.
Houston's a sprint program, not a distance program Historically, Houston has been elite in sprints/hurdles and non-existent in distance Which works in track scoring when you have elite athletes... but xc depth is everything So yeah — some XC finishes look bad, but that’s more about roster construction than pure underachievement
It's April 21st and Houston has not had a female run an event longer than an 800 so far this outdoor season.

I don’t think comparing to other teams in the conference is a good way to evaluate the program. They are in Houston, first. If the staff can’t create a monster program in Houston, there’s something amiss. Number two, even their sprinters are not improving, and it appears the recruiting is getting worse. Number three, field events… the throws appear ok, but the jumps are not good at all… and for a school with the LJ history it has, there should be something there, at least. I’m saying this for both sides of the program, but like another posted referenced with results, the women’s program is astoundingly bad.

Wow, just checked indoors too and saw they only had one girl compete above 800m. She ran just the 3k at Big 12s and placed 32nd, 44 seconds off of scoring. Yikes. Have they soft-cut the distance program? Virtually no men have competed above 800m the last couple of years either. Wonder how all of the mid-distance/distance kids on their roster feel about never being able to compete?
Word broke tonight that Arizona State assistant Milton Mallard was fired abruptly yesterday. He didn’t join team on trip to Penn Relays as planned and HC Dion Miller confirmed to team he had been immediately fired. Curious move by Mallard to leave USC last summer looks particularly bad now.

"When asked about what he plans on bringing to the track and field program, Mallard emphasized consistency."
He's not wrong about that! Consistently leaving programs abruptly after very short stays. Next boss knows exactly what to expect!

Do they have no distance coach now? Or did they have another distance coach ?

Anyone who who went to his talk at this years convention knew to expect from this guy after he wasted everyone’s time talking how to be good in the 800m. “Be really talented and fast and have some strength” great thanks Coach.
Mallard out as coach at Arizona State. Joke of a head coach Dion miller addressed team on zoom today claiming it was administrative decision just a week after getting in heated conflicts with mallard and jumps coach. Dion has done a terrible job managing coaches as well as hiring young and inexperienced coaches that can’t manage coaching vs in appropriate athlete relationships.
Ryan Whiting, Jovanni Small, Pat Henner , Ryan Godfrey , Milton Mallard, John Ellis , Ryan Ray. Arman Hall. These are the coaches that left ASU and three of these coaches resigned during the season. Seem like a pattern
