Does anyone know why WSER doesn't do live GPS tracking? Would be cool to see the runners moving along the course in real time
the race is a nonprofit (501 c3), so probably can't figure out how to have enough revenue to do everything they'd want to do ????
You can rent a bunch of them. HR does it. I think it's more that HR has actual like, danger in the course and this place just doesn't. Also a GPS tracker doesn't weight nothing and I could see a runner squirming about having to add that to their skeleton.

I suspect this is one of the biggest reasons, almost none of the elites carry a pack and would be annoyed by having to clip it to their shorts or whatever
20 miles to go. Still doubtful Jim’s record will fall, but Caleb is having an amazing day so far.
Will you still be saying Jim's record is doubtful to fall when the race is over?
Caleb Olson has yet to falter. He's with a few hours of the finish, has almost 10 minutes of cushion, and the hottest parts of the day are likely done.
"Pain cave"? Is that what Roche nicknamed his basement gym found in his multi-million dollar house located on 3 acres of land in one of the most bougiest cities in Colorado? This guy has never gone to sleep hungry in his life gimme a break what this guy knows about pain and suffering.
Also DID Roche drop or is he gonna walk it in? I'd give him more props if he walked it in, honestly.

Some of the tiniest, jankiest ultras do it... and WSER probably has way more money than those.
Budget for livestream: tens of thousands of dollars Budget for GPS trackers: LOL gtfo.
i agree.
but tbh hoka is probably financing the livestream.
so, probably, they just realize that gps trackers need cell coverage. and the areas of the course they want tracking, they wouldn't get tracking anyway with the trackers.

but with tmobile partnering with starlink, maybe the trackers will jump onto the tmobile network soon

Props to Hoka if that's what's happen. Good use of sponsorshop overlord corporate money.
And not to be that guy, but GPS trackers DON'T need cell reception. They do need a clear view of the sky as they transmit position via a satellite network, but there is a point you can make that it could potentially be pretty terrible given all the canyons -- a problem that HR wouldn't have. I think it's fine, chip time works well enough, like whatchagunnado?

They get position via a satellite network and then you could see it as they go, but GPS devices by themselves do not transmit anything. They need some type of network connection to send the data from the device to people tracking it. GPS is send only. The satellites are not tracking several billion devices at all times.

Go ahead and check the specs and how an inReach works, I'll be around while you reply and type your apology on how yes, an inReach as well as a Spot works by first getting position with the help of an array of GPS satellites, then SENDS that position using a different satellite network and NOT a cell network.
