Just tuned in. Where the heck is Klecker. So much hoopla around him?
Back in the pack. Still running. Ritz and that crew always talk up a storm and don’t deliver. I never expected someone who has never run a half marathon to break the AR. Sorry but that’s a very arrogant and unrealistic goal.
He was almost 2min off. Turns out he wasn't even close.
Great run by Dever. Wouldn’t Sam Atkin be the guy? I understand you’d worry he’d drop out.
Maybe. I just can't root for that guy. He turns up for a few early indoor races in the US and then, nothing, not even British champs. Dever ran 27:08 last year, which was by far the best by a Brit. I think Rory Leonard has a chance of at least closing in on the standard but it would be a minor miracle if he hit it.
Charles Hicks will come closest to hitting the 10K standard outside of Dever. Rory Leonard’s improvement has been impressive, but Hicks is a class apart in terms of talent, and should be due a big PB this year as long as he doesn’t get injured.
I thought McDonald’s run was much better than Klecker’s, despite only beating him by 10 seconds. Morgan missed about 5-6 days of training and one of their key workouts 2.5ish weeks ago due to disc bulge. Hoping that’s behind him now and he can build for a nice 10k in March!
Wasn’t expecting such a strong showing from Mantz given his niggles. In retrospect, maybe it was a blessing in disguise. He’s routinely pushing workouts more than Ed prescribes and maybe a little break was exactly what he needed to freshen up. He looked hungry from the start, man what a run!!

Eh I think Grant Fisher could’ve/can still do it in his debut.
March 2022 at the ten, Grant and Mantz ran PRs of 26:33 and 27:25.
March 2023 at the ten, Joe runs a PR of 27:07.
I gotta think Mantz is under 27:10 shape now, maybe even close to under 27. And I don’t think Joe is much better than 27 flat.
Grant still has another 30 seconds on them in the 10k. Going through 10k in 28:00 should be easy for him. And you could say oh that’s 3 years ago, but in August he ran 26:40 in the Olympic final.
That being said, Mantz ran incredible today! I was so impressed with his kick!
Citrus Mag all the hype for Klecker didn’t even end up the top OAC finish
Really happy for Morgan McDonald though! He’s has a rough few years of repeated injuries and sees like the forgotten on OAC. Happy to see a solid result for him at the start of the year leading into the track season.
Yeah, it's been a while, but people forget what an absolute beast Morgan was in college at Wisco (crushing Fisher on a couple occasions). Good to see him healthy and I hope he can string a few strong performances together.
Kelati and Vestri, the future of distance running. Put Vestri with a coach and a group she can train with at altitude and the sky is the limit. She should give Eyestone a call.
Considering Vestri's upward trajectory as a pro since she joined ZAP and started being coached by Pete Rea, I say if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Right. Too many hardons for altitude and big groups. She should stay put.
Surely the fact that an Israeli athlete won the Houston marathon today must being making Fox absolutely seethe.
I wonder if he will even mention the full marathon results in his next podcast (which are fairly entertaining I’ll give him credit for that , it’s like the running equivalent of listening to a Kanye West rant).
Especially since he ran poorly by his standards. I imagine the 1 marathon per month thing may be DOA if he wants to actually improve into that 2:16-17 range
Everyone should keep an eye on Matthew Richtman. A 25 y/o Montana State grad who debuted in 2:10 last October finished in 61:20 today and was mixing it up with our other top Americans. Future is very promising!
Where was Callum Hawkins in this race. I thought I saw him on the start list. Didn't he run 60 flat in the half pre-super shoes? Would be amazing if he got back to that form.
So doesn't that mean that Mantz's time is 59:16, not 59:17? Or does that .438 raise him to 59:17? Serious question.
they round up in road races. I think even 59:16.001 would round up to 59:17 but I could be wrong
I always thought that if it was .1 or under it rounded down, but .101 or above was rounded up. I thought I read that in some version of official rules when I first started coaching. Maybe I misread though.
I have it closer to 2:04:40ish, but certainly the conditions played a factor. Closer to 59:00 on a perfect day puts him in 2:04:00 territory
Would love to see Mantz just rotate between London/Berlin for a while but it won't happen. Hopefully he takes a couple real cracks at the AR in his prime.
Lost in all this is that sub-1:02/1:09 are still really solid times for Americans. Lots of people with PBs today.
& I don't have anything against Klecker/OAC/the stuff Flotrack put out. It got me excited about the race. We need more of it. It's crazy that a 1:01-flat debut doesn't do it for a lot of us anymore but how many of us got the half 100% perfect in our first tries at it? Really wish everyone in this race would run a fast marathon 4-6 weeks from now.
Random result in the Marathon. But I noticed that Seth Totten ran 2.20 in what I think is his first marathon in about seven years. He was a bit of a Letsrun hero after almost winning the Dublin marathon 7 or 8 years ago before retiring. Injury related from memory. And I think he's CJ Albertson's brother inlaw.
Great run after disappearing for a few years - very happy for him.
Klecker pushes too hard in his daily training when you look at the big picture. Morgan hints at this in his youtube channel. The Klecker miles has let him down.
End of the day though, Mantz is a competitor. Just raw want more than any other American.
