Frank Lara, who never finished higher than 83rd in NCAA xc, is now in the in mile 15 at NYC. 13:56/28:47 in college. 19th at Olympic Trails. 2:11:32 pb.
Why do Americans need to lead at all? Why would you ever run harder than you have to when you're racing a field that is better than you?
Everyone goes on how the crowd in NYC are amazing but currently where the women are around mile 20 its absolutely dead. No one. Just NYC grey city concrete. I honestly do not know where that race gets its reputation from. When I did it I hated it.
Maybe this is a dumb question but why are the lead men running past women on the course (who are also wearing bibs). They went past two on the bridge, one was filming them on a phone and shouting stuff. How are you allowed to get on the course in a race as big as NYC marathon?

Should NYC do what some of these chinese marathons do?
43 degrees, sunny, 8 mph winds out of the north at start of women’s race Women 1 mile 6:20 unofficial on the bridge Women 2 miles 5:16 (11:36) 18:16 at 5k Mile 4: 5:36 Mile 5: 5:21 Mile 6: 5:33 Obiri to the front at 6 miles, is she surging? No, just getting in position for her drinks 10k: 35:24 2:29:19 pace 1:13:59 at half, 21 women still in lead pack Mile 14: 5:43 Still a large pack at 16 mile
Men 1 mile: 5:36 Mile 2 miles: 4:46 Mile 3: 5:07 5k: 15:59 Mile 4: 5:08 Now Rory Linkletter making a break and Albertson & Nageeye follow him. Chebet and Mantz cover it and now the pack is together again Mile 5: 4:49 Chebet leading it and looking good Mile 6: 4:59 10k: 31:27 still a big pack Abel Kipchumba making a big move during mile 11 and stringing things out a little bit. But it doesn’t stay strung out for very long Mile 11: 4:52. Albertson pushing and takes lead during mile 13, then Tola takes the lead later in mile 13 and starts pushing and stringing things out 65:33 at halfway, 15 guys within 6 seconds of lead but a pack is separating. Mantz and Young go with it. Cut prize money if time is over a certain time?
This is part of the problem in being a fan of the sport. We've forgotten how to enjoy racing. Yes, weather is great, but NYC is an honest course. Who cares about time. No, we shouldn't cut prize money. We don't hand out enough of it to have any conversation other than finding ways to increase it. Just because people drop sub-2:03s, a 2:07 (or whatever) win today should still be plenty entertaining. More people in the mix late. Fast closing miles. Need to stop thinking like this.
Agreed, if people want to run fast, there are plenty of fast marathons for that, Valencia, Amsterdam, Chicago, etc. Leave a few marathons just for racing! No one’s going to set a world record in New York anyway

What has happened to American women marathoners? They don't really run fast anymore. Of the top 10 all-time times, 3 are recent and the rest happened eons ago. Do women just not train hard any more?
She’s not that giant. the others are very short. She’s Swiss and 6’0. And beautiful
Only looks very tall because everyone else is so short. 5’2 and 5’3
The average height for women in the US is 5 feet and 3.5 inches. If not "giant," 6'0 at least qualifies as very, very tall. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's just striking to see the contrast with the other women. I've never seen a woman that tall running in the lead pack of an elite marathon.

Your favorite to be top American going into this race is a division 2 college walk on. That’s what has happened. We need people to go to the marathon earlier here in the United States.

For American majors I like the crowds Boston>NYC>Chicago. It is dead in NY when you go out to the Bronx but it's about as good as it gets for a marathon. I like the way they've shot 1st ave just turning up the crowd volume & not saying a word. It is pretty electric there.
