True, but why not gamble for one of the runners on the fringe who can run low 15s, just go from the gun, make everyone run a legit 5000M, and if they let you go, they the rest will fight for only two spots
Because the runners on the fringe aren’t capable of running away from the field?
someone on the fringe has a much better chance if the race is slow. If youre competitors are better than you, youre not gonna beat them by doing all the work early while they sit and kick on you
The way todays race played out, if a 15:20-15:25 runner went from the gun running 3:05/1000meters they would have had a 45 second lead at 3000 meters on the field as they were at 10:00, even if they slowed to 3:10s for the last 2000meters the field would have had to run 2:48/1000meters to catch them.....and if they kept up running 3:05s/1000 meters then the field would have to run 2:43s, which is unlikely.
Not if he runs another 60 second final lap like he did here. Pretty much every Ethiopian can close in at least 53 off that pace, so can Kiplimo and Cheptegei. Kincaid has a better medal shot than Fisher in the 5k, the guy ran his last 200 in 26 seconds
When has somebody closed a sub-13 race with a 53 last lap after running 1:57 for the 800m prior to that? The only one I can think of is Bekele at the 2008 Olympics. He won that race. Grant needs to run like this at worlds. He has to wind it up from 3-4 laps out. If he runs like he did at the 10,000m champs, he will have a worse finish than if he squeezes down the pace. That is Grant’s strength. Not closing a hard last 400m.
Dropping Nur & Mantz is a little different than dropping Kiplimo and Cheptegei. Apples and oranges
Very, very hard to see her making the team at this point.
She is still dealing with hamstring issues here at trials, a shame because she started the season well and this would have been her first Worlds team and at home too.
But sh*t happens. Steiner will make very good competition to the Jamaicans in the 200m nonetheless

History shows this rarely, if ever, works. Also, do you believe that if a 15:20+ runner ran 3:05 the rest of the field would just let them go?

Exactly. They would have gone with them and destroyed them when they were ready
I like how if you're a distance fan and want to watch the 10k, 5k, and 3kST, you have to shell out $26 to watch your races (well 12.99 twice since 10k was more than a month away). All sprints are free to watch though!
