Collegian Luis Grijalva smokes Drew Hunter (7:42 to 7:44), Nick Young fails to break 8:00

Yes Drew Hunter showed poor finishing speed in this race.

Yes its novemeber, may not be sharp, fast pace, etc. Sure I will give you that.

BUT, when has he EVER showed good finished speed.

This was a slow race, he was in peak form, done plenty of sharp work. And oh look at that he gets BURNED:

Look at his career as a pro runner as a whole, I sure haven't ever seen any finishing speed.

If he doesn't leave Tinman and get serious about developing his closing speed he will never be a factor on the World, much less US stage in championship races.

Speed wins races.

It's not Mike Smith's safe hands I'd be worried about - it's the slave driver from his high school who's burnt him out that I'm more worried about!

Except of course he wasn't in remotely peak shape in that race. He had plantar fascia and some other foot issues for a couple weeks before hand. You are either ignorant of what was going on, a moron, or a person with a grudge who feels a need to misrepresent what happened there.

He has never shown what I consider blistering speed. But I am also unaware of many races that were well off his PR where he didn't finish well.

Here's the race video. Grivalja really dominated Hunter over the last 300. Also, rough race for Nico Young, although apparently he wasn't running for a few weeks due to a minor injury. The 5k this Friday should be exciting.

Wrong. He had done a ton of time trials to prepare, including several sub 4 miles.

It was Tinman that put the race together for him. The "he wasn't ready for the race his coach specifically organized for him to run fast with a rabbit" excuse is DUMB.

His injury was about 18 months ago. It was an injury that should take 2 months MAX to recover, and presumably he was able to bike and swim during that time. He's been healthy for 16 months. His coach signed him up for a 5k trying to break 13:15.

Even if your implication that he's not ready is correct, it's their own damn fault! If he fails to break 13:15 and get the olympic standard, there is no excuse. Him and Tinman will have failed.

Bottom line for me is that I think he will make the US team next year. If he does, some people here will complain that he should be running faster.

If Hunter makes the US team for this olympics, I will quit ragging on him and his coach. That would be incredibly impressive with such a deep field.

Now, I'm fairly confident that he will not. But I guess we'll see.

He did a bunch of time trials, which are races against your teammates. You can usually get a harder effort in during a time trial than during a race because you have your own rabbits controlling the pace.

Shelby Houlihan broke an American record in a time trial this summer. Lopez Lomong broke 13. Grant Fisher ran 13:11 and got the Olympic standard in a time trial this year. Cheptegei's world records were basically time trials. Same with Gidey.

Drew was too chicken to race. You can't use his cowardice as an excuse to why he didn't run well in the 3k.

Yeah I don't really understand this distinction. In COVID-era, all races are basically glorified time trials, and vice-versa

But they weren't. Maybe you should review the rules so that you can refer to yourself as a fan.
