This is another example of how much of a sh*tshow our sport is. Zero pay for an assistant coach at arguably one of the most recognizable G5 schools in the country. PLEASE make it make sense. Very solid group in the past. What a shame and disservice to the kids
As long as there are young, single, coach wanna be's desperate enough to take low or no pay xc/tf coaching gigs, there will be a plethora of low or no pay xc/tf coaching gigs.
And there will always be a ton of young, single, coach wanna be's in our sport.

Kinda weird to blame the workforce for lack of wages

As long as positions can be filled, administrators will not see the value in increasing salaries, because there's no need. Admin and HCs are ok with labeling jobs as entry level. So, in turn, as long as there's a group of entry level folks (which there will always be), there is no reason to adjust pay.
Chief complaints from this board are unjust hiring practices and wages.
We vote on everything under the sun at convention, maybe someone who has a problem with pay in our sport will draft a proposal for a salary scale for positions.
The crazy part is there are programs that hire head coaches with no experience.
Again, this is either A) because the standards and expectations are so low in our sport, or B) it really is that easy of a job that basically anyone can do it :)
I know that coaching cross country and track & field, if done properly, is not an easy job (granted there are A LOT of very lazy xc and track coaches, because they are allowed to be lazy). It's complex, time consuming and requires skill. So B is out in my mind. Which means that many/most AD's don't care about our sport, and many head coaches are either lazy or so insecure that they hire low/no experience assistant coaches.
There are volunteer coaches in all sports and across all divisions. It’s a great on ramp for young coaches looking to build their resume and network. It’s also great for retired coaches just looking to be a part of a program while continuing to influence young athletes. Not everything needs to be demonized. Money is tight even at the bigger schools. Nothing wrong w looking for high quality volunteers.
There will ALWAYS be young coaches who want to break into the business for little to no pay!! This has been the case since the early 1900's! It's very much needed to coach due to passion, not money to be successful! Get over it and pay your dues / work!

Okay, but how does it work when the school is in HCOL area and you want to provide for a family?

You leave coaching for a real job. Happens all the time.

Isn’t the NCAA getting rid of volunteer coach positions? Hasn’t that been the big talk for a lot of summer? That makes this posting even more confusing

I agree.
The past few years, the following programs hired coaches with Grad assistant, no coaching experience or 1 year as an assistant of a last place program in their conference.
UNC Greensboro, ECU, and USCB. I am sure there are plenty more that others know about.

They are getting rid of the title volunteer coach. So you have the ability to have all paid coaches on your staff up the ncaa limit, but some of your coaches may not be paid. Their title is just no longer “volunteer assistant”. Some schools won’t be able to afford more paid coaches, but then some like Texas A&M are loading up.
