Matt Fox with a satisfying DNF at Osaka marathon. A long list of excuses on his Strava. lol. What a c**t
Fox is interesting. Love or hate him, I think most will admit he has a wealth of running knowledge, but despite all of that knowledge and experience, he goes out and makes really poor training decisions. Fox consistently complained about the Chicago heat during summer, but did not wake up early enough to train in cooler morning conditions because he didn't want to wake up early. He obviously knows that one needs to consistently train outdoors for the marathon, but he stayed indoors on the treadmill because Chicago is cold during the winter.

Agreed. I think he has a lot of knowledge but he's very far from calming down and implementing a sane and effective lifestyle + training plan for himself. My takeaway from his DNF is this is strike 1 against his poorly thought-out plan to race a million marathons, but there's no shot he thinks "I should've delayed racing until I got everything I need in my race prep." I'm sure he'll think he's just bound to have some races not work out when he's doing so many. He also cites stress as an issue and I don't doubt it, but a significant portion of that stress seems self-imposed. I'm sure he has some external stressors. But if he wants to be like Yuki, I have to imagine it'd require a very simplified lifestyle that is extremely focused on just training and racing.
Also Luke Keogh got a kind of lukewarm result. He was just chasing sub 2:25 and it seemed he was fit enough to absolutely smash that. And he did go sub 2:25, but he was on pace for 2:21 through 30k and then blew up. I wonder how much he's gonna blame that "forced 4 days off" experiment.
The c**t won’t admit he made poor running decisions, just ready to blame absolutely anything thing else he can. Some may say he has a wealth of running knowledge…I wouldn’t trust him to point out the direction of the sky

I don’t have as strong of language, perhaps, but it does kind of boggle the mind. All summer - and I mean, literally daily, if you follow Matt Fox on Strava, he was complaining about heat. Starting runs late in the morning because he doesn’t have a job [aside: how does he afford bills? I don’t actually know if he’s addressed it - coaching?] and wishing for cold weather. It was incessant. Chicago came - he promised a 2:16 - and he ran 2:19 complaining of the heat.
I specifically remember before Indianapolis, Fox said he hoped it would be as cold as possible, because heat upsets his asthma and “heat stroke” (as someone who works in medicine - we will set his use of that term aside) and cold is where he could thrive.
Then, Houston, he missed 2:20 and blamed the wind. Doubled-down on the ED and took ozempic; stated that he went days without eating (or at least eating much) on the advice of someone who “wants to live forever.”
Now Osaka - where he got a free bib and travel on the expectation of representing Chicago - and a DNF because it’s “too cold.” And the asthma. And the dust. And the stress (from what? There are doctors, lawyers, teachers, finance bros all working full time jobs running at this level!).
It’s exhausting, and you can say I have given it too much thought (you’d be right) but it’s also *all* he ever does. Complain. Too fat. Too slow. Too hot. Too cold. If I could speak to Fox, I would just advise him to give his body a break because this repetitive stress mixed with extremely inadvisable (and apparently unsupervised) weight loss is dangerous for life, not for silly running.
On the other hand - RantoJapan is a good follow, I agree with others in the earlier pages. Hard training without the usual YouTube BS (which keeps me from watching athletes I like, such as Allie O and Philly B - just too much editing/style that feels unnatural). In my eyes, RTJ has Ben Barrows vibes.
Living in Chicago, you see this goof on the lakefront trail with his camera crew all the time. But if Matt Choi got cancelled for this crap, can we at least bring up that Floberg has been using 'bike camera people' on the course for a while now. I'm in this video at 4:44 and seeing a cameraman on the course, on a Divvy bike pissed the hell out of me. He does it again when he gets to Cermak. So maybe we all give him the same treatment as Choi from now on?
Youtube link here, starts right when his 'bike cameraman' gets on the course and ends with him almost running into an aid station table.

Allie is ok.
Philly, on the other hand! Everything is contrived drama. Case in point, her video about the Mesa half marathon has a thumbnail of her gurning with the overlay of "Accidentally Came 6th".
I don't understand what's accidental about someone who calls themselves a "professional marathon runner" coming 6th in a low key half; it was even part of Michael Ottesen's (he makes cool conetent) "Can I Make $10k from Fun Runs series"!

Accidentally enter the race Accidentally clear the schedule of conflicts for that day Accidentally eat all your pre-race nutrition the night before/day off Accidentally set your alarm for the right time to be up for raceday Accidentally commute to the venue Accidentally bring the fiancé + Coach Accidentally be at the startline at the exact time Accidentally run 13.1 Miles along the course Accidentally finish, in 6th Accidentally vlog the entire thing Fiance edits and uploads the video without you realising

You can say a lot of things about the Greatest of All Time, the Original Running YouTuber, but he's always raced respectfully and within the rules. He doesn't carry selfie sticks, he doesn't use bike crews, and he films with a hat mounted camera. I wish more running YouTubers behaved like him and Sage at races.

Although not race related, you’ll have people crying about his ‘illegal’ drone footage. I imagine these are the same people that would rat on their neighbors for visiting each other and for not wearing masks during covid.
Anyone know any of these influencers in real life? What are they like as people?
I see a lot of the content they put out and its just bloody sad to be honest. Assuming a few of them are reading this thread given they've acted upon comments in here, are any of you runfluencers actually happy? Does it not feel absolutely rank to pick up your kids from school (granted, a few won't do that anyway) and know that other parents and teachers have seen the nonsense you're flogging online?
Or are they all like Matt Fox and absolutely devoid of any basic human characteristics like empathy and self-reflection?
It all just feels a bit sad to me, and I can't decide whether the big players are worse, or its the people trying to break into the big leagues that push the boundaries of despair.

I really doubt anyone outside the very niche youtube running community have seen their videos. And even if they've seen them, I don't think normal people would give a second thought. By "normal" I mean people who are not on letsrun. And this is not a jab on you or people here, it's just honest opinion. I am also here and I think like you, think most running influencers are insufferable, but at this point I've got no more fuggs to give.
Speaking of lightly subscribed runners with funny accents, I've been enjoying Ryan Thomson's small channel. Down to earth Scottish guy. Ran 2:15 in Valencia.
