LYDIARD OR DANIELS?

Daws at one point found that JC Penney sold a shoe that was identical to the adidas Sl 72 for under $10. He got several of those. He did a lot of modifications to his racing shoes.

I seem to be doing well with my ad hoc mix of flats, lightwieght trainers, trail shoes and heavy trainers. There seems to be no PF most of the time and less upon waking. I am partial to adidas for no solid reason, other then I like the look of the brand.

NB seem cheesy and Nike I dunno, makes me feel like I am a Runner's World Subscriber or something....I guess it doesn't matter of the brand, if we are talking minimalism.

I didn't know about this particular site but I've been actually closely working with Keith. I've contributed the Hill Training chapter for his book.

I just took Peter (Snell) to the airport. Was great to catch up with him. Yes, pretty much what he said about how he trained. Interesting how all those stories were actually true, huh?

I attended an Expo recently where the great Ann Audain spoke. She mentioned that she had run for 22 years professionally with no injuries. During the Q&A, I asked her how she managed that. She gave several reasons, one of which was that she wore minimalist shoes. Her advice was to find the lightest flat you can and train and race in that.

i wonder who did that for her?

I believe she was a big enough "name" that Nike would be willing to do that.

I rolled my ankle last night for the billionth time. I have switched to runnign more miles in flats and lightwieght trainers however, this is taking time to get used to it, so I put on a cushioned pair...the heel is built up, so I was higher off the ground.

Bah!

I would caution you about racing flats that have the outside of the heel beveled. These shoes supposely(?) create a smoother transition from heel strike to toe off.

I have treated alot of ankle sprains and peroneal problems due to this construction in both flats and trainers.

At the risk of giving a bit of unsolicited advice to assist with your transition make sure you are supplementing with foot strengthening exercises and some barefoot walking and running. Happy Holidays!

Sorry Wetcoast been away a few days. To start off:

Exercise 1 Place marbles in a semi circle pick them up with your toes and place them in a cup. Place the cup out in front, then to one side then the other.

Exerice 2 Standing toe curls start standing on both feet progress to single leg stance.

Exercise 3 This exercise strengthens primarily the medial arch but the whole foot gets it. In standing keeping your forefoot and heel on ground try to "shorten your foot." Contract the inside arch muscle try to make the big toe touch the heel is the best way I can describe it it is not a gross lifting of the arch.

Exercise 4 Stand in runners pose ( no that pose:0)and try to maintain your balance for 5 seconds x 10 - 30 reps. If unable to hold the pose of foot flat start by learning to balance on one foot.

Hope these help , they are no means all inclusive but they are functional strengthening and will get you started.

Sometime back this discussion centered on Lydiard's hill training phase. After viewing several video clips of his springing and bounding technique, my question of Nobby or Kim would be where in the hill phase or other phases is bounding used? I have always thought of hill springing as the only technique associated with Authur's hill phase.

The exercises seem to help, although I caught a wicked cold and have not been running much other than short, easy and flat.

I am starting the hill phase this week and want the lower leg to be strong as it was before the twist...feels better anyway.

I was gonna make a big post on this later but ill start here. I have a handfull of questions on this system. I have just started research and reading up on this system though. I am a freshmen at college who had a horrible first XC season, after coming out of high school running mid-15's. Im also going through injuries so i figured i have a lot of time to slowly build base so i want to try this system.

What exactly are aerobic and anaerobic for us that dont know. I have no idea where to even start. With 2 kids on our XC team and no coach, since 7th grade i have ran a 4 mile loop everyday for the last 6 years and that was the extent to my training.

Right now im building base to around 70-80 mph over a long spand. So to work on my aerobic i need to run at "what feels good and build up".

So what then is anaerobic. I know i dont need to work on it untill way later in the building up, but is that striders and 100 build ups after my runs? I guess, what makes it anaerobic. I tried looking up other threads and found nothing. Anyhelp would work. Im looking to improve and have an awesome college career. And i think this training will help me aprove in the 10k and upwards as that i hope is my future

Defining aerobic and anaerobic here may well set off a whole flurry of responses. When Arthur was using the terms he simply considered anaerobic work to be any running that left you feeling breathless and aerobic work was anything that didn't.

I suppose somewhere in here there would be recognition that pretty much any running will elevate your breathing somewhat, so anaerobic running would be running which leaves you noticably breathless for more than a few seconds.

Generally speaking he did not think of 100 meter repeats as anaerobic because you supposedly do not produce lactic acid if you're running hard for less than 20 seconds. But he wanted you to take long recoveries, 200-300 meters, because running 100s with short recoveries could make a session of them anaerobic.

But again, he used these terms forty or so years ago when people weren't quite so precise in their terminloogy so someone else may offer another description of what constitutes aerobic and anaerobic work.
