Sometimes there's a big difference, sometimes there's not. Non-renewals can be vision differences, inappropriate behavior or anything in between really. They're a convenient tool if used responsibly/sparingly by a coach who has their assistants'/athletes' best interests in mind. I see a non-renewal and a firing as basically the same thing, one just happens to be at the same time of year and accepted in our line of work.
