What is it with that brit page, they always lock threads. its like they are control freaks. Just leave people to it. It only needs moderating if threats are made, then they can just easily remove a post. They are obsessed with locking all threads that get interesting.

Whilst not making excuses for the UK Ultra fB forum thread (I never venture there) you have to understand that the laws in the UK around what constitutes an offence when posting messages on forums, social media, emails and electronic communications are far more draconian than the US. This means that forum moderators and those posting messages have to tread very carefully if they are UK based. There have been many cases of individuals having hefty fines imposed and even the odd prison sentence. I'm not saying that anyone has posted anything that is not fact or in the public domain just that, given our draconian laws, moderators tend to be a little quick to pull the plug to protect themselves and others from potential legal action.

There's nothing on that thread that has anything to do with lawsuits that i can see, no threats or defamation of character.

Yes several have a go at Terrie and David, but its not lies. They could never sue as they'd have to prove it was untrue, and its not!

Often an individual will make a complaint which will result with a visit from the Police. I have heard cases of individuals receive official Police cautions for messages they've posted on the internet (email / social media / forums / text etc.).

Whilst not wanting to get into the individual comments posted as I've not seen the forum, I can imagine that some of the postings could be loosely interpreted as falling foul of one or more of the following:

• Protection from Harassment Act 1997

• Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994

• Malicious Communications Act 1988

• Communications Act 2003

• Breach of the Peace (Scotland)

• Defamation Act 2013

It all sounds very impressive and would cow the easily intimidated by legal jargon but basically has no relevance to the matter at hand. Alan Rumbles was expertly manipulated by someone appearing to be a lot less cunning than he really is. Part of being a grown-up on the internet is being able to spot these people. You keep your eyes on what they don't answer at all times for example the Bournemouth Marathon result.

Another key indicator of a liar is that they attempt to frame questions as being abuse and throw around accusations, insults and threats hoping that people are unwise enough to reply in kind, this derailing the issues.

A liar will often claim to have evidence that exonerates them but unlike a truly innocent person who would silence their accusers by making this evidence available to all, they make endless excuses and equivocations.

All I am saying is that many UK based posters have to be very careful in what and how we post things online. It is very easy to end up with an official Police caution when conversations get a little out of control and emotions are brought into the communications.

I have no idea as to why the UK Ultra Running fB thread was locked down however I can conjecture that it was in an effort to stop the thread spiralling out of control and preventing potential legal issues for the admins and / or thread posters.

Why do you think they rue the day? If they had any regrets they'd not have announced ANOTHER trip using that same facebook page.

If they regretted anything they would just disappear. People would soon forget about them. But they are too desperate for attention to just go away.

No need to lock it, nothing illegal there. All you need is the report to admin button to alert a moderator. Its over the top to stop a discussion that makes no threats and tells no lies

These discussions of british law stifling conversation are hilarious considering that the chavs on the facebook page were talking about how litigious americans are. Apparently in britain you don't need to be litigious about libel/slander because the government will shut down any unpleasant conversations for you.

It's very easy for someone to report a case of online harassment to the authorities in the UK and is often used overzealously. The article in the link below was written in 2015 and states there were over 16,000 cases reported to the Police. Now although it is obvious that not all will result in action being taken by the authorities it does show that the Police are spending an increasing amount of their time and budget in investigating allegations of online harassment etc. I suspect that few actually get through to court however, there will be a reasonable number that may be dealt with by a visit from the Police and / or a Police caution.

Whilst I cannot possibly know the rationale behind the shutting down of the thread on the UK Ultra fB page I do know that most UK based admins / moderators are often keen to close down any thread / forum that has the potential to spiral out of control to save themselves the obvious aggravation that comes with potential legal issues arising should individuals post anything that is deemed as harassment etc. and is reported to the Police.

There are hardly any police in the uk now, not enough to be able to attend burglaries or to watch known terrorists. They also busted hundreds of pedos looking at child porn, but didn't prosecute them as too expensive.

So I assure you they aint interested in people having a row online and calling the police. Only if it was ongoing dangerous hate speeches or credible threats of violence that they feel might happen. That MIGHT get the person a phone call to say dont do again. Police visits and cautions are very rare for an online thing.

So that ultrarunning Fb page has no reason to keep deleting things and locking threads.

I am firmly convinced that this was Dave Reading that wrote that post and not Terrie. Look at the emails from Dave and you can see he can generally spell and has proper grammar. Compare it to the About page of the davereading.co.uk website that was obviously written by Terrie with the complete lack of punctuation and grammar.
