His departure from Clemson was out of his control. The administration at Clemson had already made their minds that they weren't going to hire him or Hall as a head coach. All the stuff that happened with Lawrence Johnson was before Huffins arrived and the new coach Elliott picked who he wanted. Hall and Huffins were the best coaches on that staff.

Leaving 3 schools in three years has nothing to do with personel changes in every case.

Maag from GVSU to Micbigan State. Not announced yet, but official according to the kids on the GVSU team.

Who is at Ole Miss for throws? Getting very late and have had plenty of time

I had a feeling that Maag was going to be leaving GVSU just not sure where.

As for Ole Miss who know's they'll probably announce someone or anyone they can find. Not much though put into the throws at that school for a long time.

Congratulations to Scott Jones who is most deserving and will do an outstanding job back at Illinois. He has great ties to the midwest and internationally and has proven that he can develop talent. Good for him and good for UI. Akron's loss is the Illini's gain!

What the heck is going on at St. Martin (D2) in WA? They have had 3 head coaches in the last 8 months (just hired a new XC coach so that makes 4). I don't remember the lady at the start but she'd been there for 7-8 years, then Chad Colwell then Montgomery. Is there something toxic going on there? What are the athletes thinking at this point?

How about those a little closer to the situation. What did they think about VanHoy as interim when Pete Watson left UNC. Didn't last long....

Vanhoy sucked as a runner and the pressure will get to him as a "coach." He won't last more than a year there before they bring in someone else who will come to "save the unc xc program" Kid is a joke. It hurts that he's losing Huryz. The carolina fan boys will deny it until the day he leaves chapel hill, but it's going to happen

He isn't a hire. You are shedding light on the fact that you are an idiot.

He is an interim coach. He is replacing a coach that left mid year, because the director was going to retire at the end of the year and he would not replace him.

So ask yourself, what "great hire" would take a job where a new boss would come in 5 months and want "his guy" to coach the distance runners and be out of a job immediately?

What I think -

VanHoy is on stage... If gets these kids to run faster this year then last year then he has a fair shot to keep spot.

He was some nice young kids to work with. Look at their results, how many Frosh/Soph were in his top 7 in Cross this year?

Better question - who is in line to take the director of T&F at the end of this year? Someone in house?

What a joke of a program this is. The kids didn't perform when they had a good coach and now that their #1 runner and coach have left its all over. I say they won't make nationals for atleast 5 years. More like 8-10.

It does appear the XC team will take a significant hit over this. But most of the future will depend on the coaching changes for next year at UNC. The right coach could rebuild it in just a few years.

Most of the posts from the UNC thread a few years back was probably by the same people. Huryz was going to Colorado regardless and if you saw his Flotrack interview you would get the same impression that he did not like the whole administration at UNC, Especially the head track coach. I could be wrong though.

Nate Jenkins had a break out year! He was a sub 4 min guy so he had the potential to do big things and Ryan brought those 3k, 5k performances outta him.

He interned at Zap Fitness for a while. I know Zap doesn't do a whole heck of a lot if their athletes BUT they do have some success. Ryan definitely picked up some experience and knowledge along the way.

You guys can rip on Vanhoy all you want but he does have COACHING experiences. He wasn't some professional distance runner that got a coaching job because, well, he was professional.

Time will tell but I think Ryan is going to do a good job at Ole Miss.

Vin wasn't a great runner, I'm pretty sure Mark Wetmore wasn't a great runner and I know Martin Smith wasn't anything to brag about. All developed great runners and build great programs.

What an idiotic post. I don't know VanHoy from Adam, but I know a mean-spirited poster when I see one. There is a little luck in every successful coach's career. Like VanHoy, they took advantage of one or two opportunities when they came around. That doesn't mean the coach can't coach. Life is hard and often times unfair. Let those facts soak in for a moment and try not to forget them. Instead of ripping on current coaches in the game, all you haters should stop whining about fairness and focus on making yourselves better and more marketable. When opportunity comes knocking, you might actually be ready to answer the door.

A lot of changes in the south, and west. Not enough changes in the east schools. These dinosaurs hold on to a job for 40 yr, win 3 conference titles, and continue to take up spots. Someone do something....

Anyone know anything about Niagara or Commerce? I heard from a few people that Commerce pays fairly well for a D2 gig?

So this guy is the next Mark Wetmore? The odds are highly stacked against that. Most successful distance/xc coaches have shown some previous ability in the sport. This is the best place to get experience in the overwhelming majority of cases. Unfortunately, however, some administrations look at perception rather than reality. This is what sticks in the craw of most hard scrabble veterans----and the genesis of most of those posts. However, those kinds of programs usually end up imploding.
