I'd love to know the following
1) Why would wanyone take the lead at 10k in a hot marathon
2) Why do stars like KIplagat do races like this? Wouldn't they make way more in a marjor? I always thought perhaps they got money from the Army or POlice or something but she now lives in the US.
Kelsey Bruce with some screen time!
2) Because she has respect for World Championships race?
She is dieing, breathing heavily and spitting a lot after 50 mins. But she is also the clearly fastest runner in the field with a 2:17 flat PR, so it might work out anyways.
Assuming not rhetorical - 1) Some athletes are comfortable in hot conditions. Doesn't affect them as much so they feel ready to go. I used to race in the Southern USA and could beat deep fields in super hot conditions. 2) Kiplagat is 37 years old, I think. Not sure she gets big appearance fees anymore. She probably wants another medal.

Edna seems to like WCh marathons, she raced all of them since 2011.
Also Chepngetichs move came much too hard and early, totally unnecessary

The one don’t understand is Aga, running New York in five weeks.

Ok. I rewound and watched all the heats.
TO me the big news was that Lynsey Sharp and Hanna Green had awful days and were sent home. Former world champ Eunice Sum almost went home - she let up in her heat and was passed for the final qualifying spot in her heat. She did get in on time but this was far from a case of her having it in the bag.
But Lynsey Sharp will still Balme Caster Semenya ....
Kenya 1, 2, 3. Dimhoff and Groner Top 15 about 2 min back.

Couldn't her race plan be to go halfway and then decide between
* Finishing worlds if a shot at medal
* Bailing and planning to hit NYC hard
Fantastic race by Ukrainian Shafar. With only a 2:36 high PR, she ran a very fast race, only 1 minute behind the leaders at 10k and then dropped out shortly after. Tempoed/Raced a 10k/15k to make most out of the trip instead of hanging on for 26 miles in this heat and potentially get hurt.
I'm hoping more athletes will drop out at the half-marathon, it would even allow them to run another big full marathon few months later in better conditions.
After 18.21 and 18.23, just ran 17.17
Edna Kiplagat, Ruth Chepgnetich, Visiline Jepkesho, Helalia Johannes and Rose Chelimo are going together now
5 in the breakaway pack, they've caught Chepngetich. Edna Kiplagat in there. 2 more lady casualties.
Top 5 now a full minute out in front.
I have to admit, I love that Paula Radcliffe is not listed as the WR holder by IAAF and it's Mary Keitany's (KEN), 2:17:01 from London. Beautiful karma.
