I took a risk quoting Renato's expression, but I always give him some latitude when he describes things in English. With only some minor tweaks, we have seen many examples of this counter-intuitive decrease in performance, and the point stands. Regarding slowing down in the '90s, the example of England and the 1500m is enough to make that a true statement. Or the mile. Or the 5000m. Or the marathon.
