OG game that we played in the arcade? Space Invaders. We went nuts for that (and Pac Man).
Then the Atari dominated our weekends with Donkey Kong and Pitfall.
The Commodore 64 smashed our expectations with some of the best games ever, such as Seven Cities of Gold (my personal favorite).
The NES was top notch with legit Tetris, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and of course Legend of Zelda, the original.
Then I went to college and stopped playing everything but an odd game of Tetris now and then.
Now, it is just my kid's Breath of the Wild on the Switch that has potential to pull me back in...
And I think that for me the best games are GTA San Andreas, GTA 4 and 5
Also, RDR2
This will always be my favorite.
Fortnite
Anyone still play Snood?
We are 12 pages in but none of us (myself included) has bothered to define "best."
What makes a game the best in your opinion?
What makes a game great to you?
cultural impact should also be considered
Arcade - Space Invaders (color) in a pizza shop....quarters lined up....NEXT
Console - HALO & GTA

Lot of great games on this thread. Nothing like subjectivity disguised as objectivity.
Greatest game for me was FF6 because it was the first RPG I really had and blew my mind with the in-depth story and how they could bring in slavery, death, craziness, ancient relics, adventure, and treasure hunting etc so wonderfully. When the crazy man actually succeeds in destroying the world - holy F...
FF7 was a masterpiece in its own right but it built on what came before it. Also loved it.
Best Zelda game? I've played pretty much all. Ocarina was amazing obviously. I think I had more enjoyment with Majora's mask because it was harder/freakier but OOT was first for sure for N64 awesomeness. All the games have been amazing up to BOTW. I remember reading a review of OOT and the author was complaining about getting old and still saving zelda every f-ing time and same old same old. Yet I'm probably the same age and loved them all. Skyward sword might have been my favourite there. I really enjoyed uncovering the 'history' and obviously BOTW was incredible too.
Multiplayer - Goldeneye if you were of the right age was fantastic. Also first over the top 1st person shooter. Sure you had crazy weapons in doom etc but it was the genre. Goldeneye you could be launching rockets or shooting with the golden gun or paint gun for real. Was crazy fun. And we had sleepover parties staying up all night for that sh-t. What a blast.
Then in college we had unreal tournament. Also plenty of fun. Great time to have LAN type parties with everyone playing together - what a blast.
Also huge in the college days for us was Tony Hawk 1 and 2. Like who would have thought a skateboarding game could be a blast? yet whomever had a playstation in their dorm was king. Launched a whole genre of 'niche' sports games outside of Madden, MLB, NHL, FIFA games.
2 player fighting games? Streetfighter 2. That is still #1. I think the codes are basically pop culture now and I could still launch an energy blast if I picked it up. "I'm mucus!" IYKYK. Killer instinct, mortal kombat were fun but SF2 was the first mainstreamer to really make it amazing. And I think that casino games are also among the best games now. The variety is just crazy, and for me, it can be hard to choose what to play; I prefer slots, and there are so many of them, with different themes, bonuses, on other platforms, and so on. I don't have that much experience yet, so I try to choose casinos with small deposits. This site https://plkasynaonline.com/platnosci/blik-20-zl/ I came across recently helped me to find casisnos with deposit 20 zł Blik which is the perfect option for me. I can't say which casino or game is the best now because I need some time to explore them all.
GoldenEye was definitely a standout for its time, the multiplayer was something special, especially with friends all night. It’s one of those games that really shaped a whole generation of gamers.
I also completely agree about Tony Hawk 1 and 2. It’s impressive how a skateboarding game became such a cultural moment. The gameplay, the music, it all just worked perfectly and still holds up today.
Spider-man (2018) or Spider-man 2: PS3 & PS4 had a lot of really good & fun open world games. Spider-man waited & then took the best things from each game, adapted them to the spider universe, & combined them in 1 masterpiece. Reminds me how Apple is late to the party, but smooths out what Android did & improves on it.
It's extremely fun, story is engaging in my opinion. Combat is fairly simple yet never boring. Navigating the world is fairly quick & not tedious like most open world games.
Doom Eternal: Swear this game gets better each time I play it. It's peak as far as shooter games go.
God of War (2018): Perhaps the best story as well as graphics for a game. First game I've played that felt more like a movie than a game. When this game came out it was so far above any other game released before it.
