If Roche doesn’t have an amazing day he DNFs. win or excuse filled drop out isn’t a good look
This time there is no easy excuse like a rolled ankle. Meagan said in the interview before DNF-ing that David was just falling apart.
Visual reports indicated he was also limping or at least had a hitch in his stride. Sounds like he has any excuse he wants - knee, ankle, or total physiological shutdown due to too fast of a pace for the conditions...
To be fair I like to make fun of David because he's annoying, but he truly is a strong runner. He just talks about himself too much in an overly dramatic way.

“he is feeling rough. Vision loss, feels like his body is failing. He could have won the whole thing on a good day, but he’s gonna fight to get top 10-15. We will reassess at the next aid stop”
yea he’s gonna DNF sadly. Unlimited Fuel for the haters

Are there more details on those tests? Like what is a "Hiking Drift Test"?
Probably a heart rate drift test while hiking uphill to establish an "estimate" of LT1 heart rate while hiking uphill. It's something of a bogus test but HR drift tests are popular with ultra runners because it's in Koop's book (and also Friel's cycling book I think?).

Reminds me of the High schoolers who would “fall” and then limp before quitting. Once he knew he was gonna DNF the “hitch” in stride came out
