3/30 update: We are closing this thread to new posts. I did an ok job of following it for a few pages and moderating it but now am 10+ pages behind. The thread has served its purpose - the news has gotten out and people have reacted to it - we don't need pages and pages of the same discussion.

It's a deep and curious mystery to me how laws and religious precepts are necessary to sooo many people to be decent and do the right thing. How decent and right is it to refrain from wrongdoing only because of the threat of punishment? Or that classic proposition: Pascal's Wager: what if there IS a God? the bet-welcher's staple? (And what if "Doing the Hokey Pokey IS 'what it's all about?!'")

Not a surprise but I feel bad for him as this is a very toxic climate with Trump. As more elite runners are announcing (LGBTQ+ specifically) -- it does paint a bit of a target on the sport and the athlete with respect to any funding, sponsorship deals,etc...
Major brands are pulling back from DEI efforts and might feel inclined to cancel sponsorships of athletes like Nico Young and Nuguse.
Not my wish but this is just the harsh reality of the Trump 2.0 era as companies bend the knee to him.
You need to be more nuanced. The Trump administration does not care if anyone is gay. The Secretary of the Treasury is gay and the highest gay official ever in the government.
They just don’t make a big deal of it as identity is not their focus.

Excellent point, Tammy Bruce the State Department spokesperson is gay as are many of his ambassadors and other members of his administration.
I don't like Yared because he is gay I like him because he is a great runner who has a nice chill vibe about him.

And what is this deep insightful knowledge? Are most men out there falsely making love to their women?
DEI would mean that athletes would be assigned time handicaps and that certain athletes would be excluded because of quotas.
This isn't actually what DEI means. This is what right-wing, racial supremacy nutjobs want you to think DEI is. DEI is about creating an environment and systems to get more people of diverse backgrounds into a field with the assumption that great talent can come from anywhere. It is not about quotas, allowing under-qualified people in roles with specific qualifications, etc.
It may not be what DEI is supposed to mean, but it's what MANY companies have turned it into.

We will find out how much they care. There are news reports that the Speaker of the House has been caught using Grindr.
Look up the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 2357-2359. Tolerance and acceptance are not used- compassion, respect, and sensitivity are. This first guy is obviously a troll and is being a jerk- but that does not negate the fact that the actual Church- what literally comes from Church authority (not Notre Dame administration or faculty) does not teach 'tolerance and acceptance'.
Of course everyone should 'love your neighbor as yourself'- and it is good Yared is treated with dignity and respect. The fact this has to even be said is a sad commentary. Still, in the context of literal Catholic teaching, if you have an established relationship with someone it would be appropriate to challenge them on their behaviors if they are in fact trying to live as a Catholic.
I'm sad this is treated any differently than him introducing a girl friend but I'm happy he is being himself and showing young gay athletes they have a role model.
