Just a guess, but they may have been Bekele & Maggard who got left behind at the gun.
May explain Bekele's opening 73 and Maggard's opening 84 (DNF'd at 3200).
Fenton confirmed this! Wild.

Pacer couldn’t make it to 5K sadly
13:31 at 5K with Blanks leading.
Love to see the aggression from Graham Blanks

Looking back you have to ask yourself what the leading 3 at the start were thinking. A more modest 15:17 at 5k might've served everyone much better.
They want the American record and sub-30. Why does Kelati or Cranny need to run 30:25? What does that do for them?
We want a lot of things. A 30:25 would've put them in better position for the rankings.
The other runner left at the start was Bedard. They were coming from off the track while they were lining everyone up. Not sure what was happening. Bathroom maybe? Start was already delayed briefly I think.
Blanks moves out and Bekele takes over, they're still roughly on pace (65s)
Through 6000 in 16:13 - 16:15, pack of 11 chasing 27-flat has broken away . . .

Valby's CR survives by 12 seconds.
Kosgei: 15:00/16:02 . . . hard way to run a pr . . . 2nd fastest a-t collegian.
Going forward, it'll be interesting to compare the trajectories of Kosgei and Wayment, seeing who brings it heaviest in the 3000SC this summer.

Bekele is a f*ing baller. He was so far back when they started the race and now he’s leading it.
and now Bekele moves back out and slots into 3rd with a bit of bumping, Blanks leading again

Kinda nasty work Bekele has to lead given that start, but I’d assume the others dk about that.
Blanks moves to the outside of lane 1 to try to get someone else to take over, no one bites, he's slowing (66 last lap)
Samuel takes over, pushing to get back to the lights?
Through 7600, now down to pack of 8, Samuel taking the lead, Clinger on caboose.

he's had some bad luck in races, bet he wants to get that NCAA record.
Bekele back in front, they're still not far from the lights. Bekele, Wildschutt, Samuel, Blanks still looking good
Wildschutt takes it over with 800 to go, they are picking it up and 5 guys still there
Still possible, thru 9000m, we'll see 8 guys under 27 . . .
Look how far back bekele was at the start. What a baller.
