The trigger here for so many was the video itself.
In the video you see Emma and Joe dressed nicely as a newborn baby is pushed towards them by someone you don't see. Emma scoops up her baby as though it was a fresh delivery of flowers. The optics of the video do make it seem like Emma "purchased" her baby. We don't see the surrogate, and because Emma did not have the baby, we don't see her exhausted in the hospital, but rather dressed in jeans and a sweater. The video makes it look like a baby was cooked up just for her and she paid for it because she had the money to do so.
My wife and I adopted a baby from birth. We were at the hospital the day of the birth. Had a video been taken of us as our son was brought to us it would have looked nearly identical to the video Coburn posted except that we were seated.
The idiots criticizing Coburn and her husband because of optics are just as bunch of morons as those criticizing them for surrogacy in the first place....only they are more stupid.
It is illegal for anyone to pay, offer to pay, or receive money or anything of value for the placement of a child for adoption, which is just one of the ways it differs from surrogacy. A mother deciding to place her child for adoption at birth and you having gone through the legal process to do so, is very different than surrogacy and if you don't understand the difference, you might want to reevaluate who the actual moron is.
As a pregnant woman right now at 15 weeks you are absolutely insane to say that. Pregnancy can be the most humbling thing to ever happen as a woman. I’ve been sick the last 9 weeks (a first) and this being my 5th with some rosier pregnancies in the past I thought I was a pro and yet here I am practically bed ridden .. I do think surrogacy would set you up for some big time failures as a parent. The purging of selfishness and humbling during pregnancy prepare you for the worst that is to come of giving up your life during the first years… I wish her well!!

It does seem weird to be present at the birth of the child you adopted. Why weren’t the biological parents unable to raise the child? Where was their support network?
The greatest good for a child is to be raised by their parents—their biological parents. Sometimes this isn’t possible: parents die, parents abuse, parents become addicts, parents are incarcerated, parents abandon.
Adoption is first and foremost about providing a family for orphans. It is not primarily about “completing” ones family.
The world is full of kids that are neglected and abused. I don't see why anyone cares how a loving family has their child, be it adoption, fostering, surrogate, or birth.
As a parent myself it is what you do after the birth that really matters.
What you saw was not a picture a new baby. It was a video that focused on Emma and her discussing surrogacy on her public instagram account. She's a minor celebrity so her instagram account isn't just viewed by friends and family.
So you think she deserves insults because of this?
No, and I didn't insult her. But she took a very private moment and made it completely public. It's not out of bounds for people to talk about it.

Apparently you have no comprehension skills since I never said surrogacy and adoption are the same thing...legally or otherwise.
My comment was to those morons who criticize the video as if what you see would not be a normal reaction for the parents of a new child of theirs.

Here's to the above knowing nothing about adoption.

How private was it going to be? At some point there's a kid there so it would need to be addressed. Did you expect the couple to hide the fact that they had a child and how that child came to be? I'm sure that would go over well with the nimrods within this thread.

You are implying that any circumstance where a person shows off their new baby should be greeted with the same reaction. If she announced that she stole the baby, would you expect the criticism to be the same as if she adopted? Of course not, because context matters. They criticized the method of how she acquired the baby, not the mere fact she has one and showed it in a video. I would imagine that you would get 3 very different reactions to the exact same video if she said she adopted it, bought it, or stole it. And... you are projecting with your insults (lacks comprehension skills, moron, stupid).
The only reason surrogacy is still legal in most of the United States is because Republicans cannot figure out how to approach it. It's a mish-mash of confusing laws in some states and a free-for-all in the others. On one hand, Republican lawmakers would love to ban it completely because regulating what women do with their bodies gives them giant stiffies as it's one of their favorite pastimes. On the flip side, they love keeping women barefoot and pregnant and have a love affair with babies being born at any cost, especially ones that will be raised by people with a lot of money that they don't have to pay for or allocate aide for. A very difficult position for them to be in as you can plainly see.

My biggest takeaway from this thread is how ignorant the general public is to what adoption and surrogacy are and how they work. And I guess it's not totally surprising given how relatively few people ever experience either one directly.

What is a woman btw? You just committing a micro-aggression that only women can be pregnant you transphobic pig
Where is the evidence that rich women or that Emma herself is "renting a womb" for convenience sake? All this pearl clutching about surrogacy, but is what you fear actually even happening?
Let's think about the richest powerful celebrity women out there.
Jennifer Aniston, Taylor Swift, Oprah, Ellen Degeneres
Aren't mothers.
And for celebrities who used surrogates I know of:
Kim Kardashian, Ellen Pompeo and Gabrielle Union and all three spoke openly about going through serious medical complications or long infertility journeys which was why they resorted to surrogacy.
It really makes you think. If you really believe Emma chose this for convenience sake, why didn't freaking Beyonce do the same so she could continue her career? Why did Kim have two children of her own and dealt with the media calling her fat, when she could have just rented a womb? Why did Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, and countless athlete mothers not choose surrogates?
Could it be that this is actually not an ideal option for majority of women? Could it be that women WANT to be pregnant most of the time? It makes me really think something was going on behind the scenes.
Until I see droves of our richest women doing this for convenience, I will not question it. But I haven't seen it yet.
I already replied to your post, but it seems worth pointing out that there is a booming surrogacy market. This is just one article about commerical surrogacy in India:
Here's a quote from the abstract: "India had a commercial surrogacy boom until exploitative factors led to the passage of the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill in 2019, which banned the practice."
I think someone else pointed this out to you, but posting an article about how surrogacy works or whether or not it's being ethically applied in India is not proving that it's ethically applied here. This article says it's problematic in THOSE countries and that's it. A few other people have mentioned this--but anecdotally I know women here in the states who have been surrogates and they are well-educated, upper middle class women who report feeling fulfilled by the process and like they are engaging in an act of selfless service for others. In this case, the anecdote is as powerful as an article about an irrelevant country's practices so both should be considered equally by people on the board who are now experts on the morally fraught topic of surrogacy lol.

is it possible… for there to be a letsrun thread that is only positive comments? If you don’t have anything positive to add to this, try not saying anything at all! Let’s take personal opinions about Emma and Joe out of it… they are both objectively going to make amazing parents and deserve nothing but congratulations for this exciting new chapter of their lives! Huge congratulations to the Bosshards
how exactly do you know they will make "Amazing parents"? Emma is extremely self centered and Joe is clueless
