Disgraced New Zealand long distance runner Zane Robertson was freed on bail by a Kenyan court on Thursday but ordered to surrender his passport as he faces charges including attempted rape.

All media outlets are reporting he is released on bail for attempted rape.

Going by this, there are no rape charges. That in itself is a relief for Zane, because he'll avoid the stigma of that accusation behind bars, should he ever serve time (unlikely I think).

As to the gun possession without licence, that needs to be looked into as well.

The fact that he's out on bail, and could, in theory, escape Kenya, signals to me that the anticipated charges will not be too heavy.

Escaping the country, while unlawful, might be something to consider, lest the legal procedures take weeks/months/years, without rhyme or reason, as is often the case in developing nations.

That's correct. I was "friends" with Ngugi on Messenger, and he was desperate for a coaching gig in the USA. On trying to get more info re his coaching experience, Ngugi refused to divulge any information about his runners. It was a strange going back and forth over several weeks, until I gave up because he was extremely secretive bordering on paranoid.
